Championship background
Graham Hill arrived at round 7 leading the 1968 F1 World Championship on 24 points, with Jacky Ickx on 16. Lotus – Ford headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 29 points.
Race entries
Siffert received a new Lotus 49B, while Oliver used the older car returned by Walker after his Rouen accident. Robin Widdows made his championship debut for Cooper alongside Elford. Gurney returned with the Eagle, and increasingly prominent rear wings appeared across the field.
Thursday morning timed practice
Hill set a strong early standard, with Amon and Oliver responding. Siffert carefully learnt his new car, while Widdows’s first session ended with an engine failure. Ferrari compared exhaust arrangements and several teams adjusted their wings. Hulme briefly removed his wing before deciding to refit it, illustrating how actively teams were still exploring the devices.
Thursday afternoon timed practice
Attwood missed the session after his BRM struck a gatepost while leaving the paddock, damaging the rear suspension. Amon tried the spare Ferrari and Rodriguez compared BRMs, while Gurney moved his wing forward. Rodriguez then suffered a suspension mounting failure. Cooper had no spare car for Widdows, leaving the newcomer short of running.
Friday final qualifying
Hill improved to 1:28.9 and Oliver joined him at the front, with Amon unable to complete a clear final challenge. Siffert quietly secured fourth in the new private Lotus. Brabham’s engine difficulties continued, Hulme broke a driveshaft joint, and Beltoise ran out of fuel. The session ended with Lotus occupying the first two grid positions.
Qualifying Classification
Bonnier and Moser were allowed to start despite initially failing the qualifying requirements. Friday afternoon’s untimed running did not alter the grid.

Friday afternoon untimed practice
The final hour allowed adjustments without changing the grid. McLaren tried rain tyres in dry conditions and also drove Bonnier’s car to assess its handling. Ferrari ran both cars, Surtees appeared briefly, and Moser made progress with his Brabham. This preparation session followed the conclusion of qualifying.
What happened in the 1968 British Grand Prix?
Oliver led initially before Hill took over, with Siffert completing a Lotus trio at the front. Hill retired with driveshaft and suspension trouble, returning the lead to Oliver. Amon then challenged Siffert as the two pursued the remaining works Lotus.
Oliver’s final-drive failure ended his chance of a first win. Siffert, having repassed Amon, inherited the lead and defended it cleanly. The Ferrari stayed close, but the Swiss driver resisted the pressure and secured a memorable privateer victory.
Amon finished second and Ickx third, followed by Hulme, Surtees and Stewart. Surtees had lost his rear wing during the race, while Stewart struggled to maintain his earlier pace. Siffert’s success was the final World Championship victory for Rob Walker’s team.
After the race, Graham Hill headed the drivers’ standings with 24 points, followed by Jacky Ickx on 20. Lotus – Ford led the constructors’ table on 38, with Ferrari on 25.
