His racing career began in a Cooper-JAP before he stepped up to a Formula Two Cooper-Bristol Mk1 for the 1952 season. Although results were hard to come by, he showed flashes of promise by claiming victory in a minor race at Snetterton. Unfortunately, his campaign ended on a low note when the Cooper was heavily damaged in a serious crash towards the close of the season.

Undeterred, Barber headed to Argentina at the beginning of 1953 to compete in the 1953 Argentine Grand Prix. Driving a works Cooper T23, he finished eighth after a challenging race, seven laps behind the winner. During the trip he also took part in a Formula Libre event in Buenos Aires, where he crossed the line in 12th place.

Returning to Britain, Barber raced a Golding-Cooper, a car believed to have been built using components from his crashed Cooper-Bristol Mk1. During the British Empire Trophy on the Isle of Man, he was involved in a tragic accident that claimed the life of fellow driver James Neilson. Barber sold the car shortly afterwards.

His final spell in competition came in 1955 when he raced a Jaguar C-type before bringing his motorsport career to a close.

After stepping away from racing, Barber embraced a quieter way of life, retiring to a boat in the Mediterranean, where he spent his later years far from the noise and intensity of the race circuit.
