Born in Düsseldorf in 1914, Peters came of age during a turbulent period in German and European history. Like many drivers of his era, his racing opportunities were shaped by world events, and meaningful international competition only truly reopened after the Second World War. When motorsport resumed across Europe in the late 1940s and early 1950s, Peters was among those who sought to test themselves against a new wave of continental talent.

His moment in the Formula One World Championship came on 3 August 1952, when he entered the 1952 German Grand Prix. At the time, the World Championship was being contested under Formula Two regulations, meaning the grid often featured a mix of established stars, ambitious independents, and determined local entrants.

Although he did not reach the finish and scored no championship points, participation alone in that demanding era was a notable achievement. Cars were fragile, circuits were unforgiving, and private entrants often competed with limited resources against better-funded factory-backed teams.

While Peters never returned to the Formula One championship, his appearance secures his place in the official record books as one of Germany’s early Grand Prix competitors. Drivers like him formed the backbone of post-war European racing—men who may not have enjoyed long careers in the spotlight, but whose efforts helped sustain and rebuild the sport during its most challenging years.

Josef Peters died on 24 April 2001 at the age of 86.
