Luigi Taramazzo was an Italian racing driver whose name is linked to one of Formula One’s most glamorous and unforgiving events: the Monaco Grand Prix. Though his World Championship career amounted to a single attempted entry, Taramazzo was part of the rich network of privateers who gave depth and colour to Grand Prix racing in the 1950s.

Born in Italy in 1932, Taramazzo came of age during a golden era for Italian motorsport. The nation was home to legendary marques such as Ferrari, Maserati, and Alfa Romeo, while road circuits and hill climbs created opportunities for ambitious local drivers.
Racing career
Formula One attempt
Taramazzo’s sole Formula One World Championship entry came at the 1958 Monaco Grand Prix, one of the most prestigious races in world motorsport. The streets of Monte Carlo were—and remain—among the most difficult circuits on the calendar, combining tight barriers, little margin for error, and immense pressure during qualifying.
For the event, Taramazzo was entered in a shared Maserati 250F alongside Ken Kavanagh. The Maserati 250F was already a legendary machine by 1958, having carried many great drivers to Grand Prix success earlier in the decade. However, by then the competition had strengthened, and qualifying standards at Monaco were severe.
Neither Taramazzo nor Kavanagh qualified the car, meaning Taramazzo did not start the race. Though brief, the attempt placed him within Formula One’s official historical record and among the many brave private entrants who took on Monaco’s daunting challenge.
Death
Luigi Taramazzo died on 15 February 2004 at the age of 71.
