Racing career
Harris was born in Mufulira, Northern Rhodesia, and built his racing career across the regional circuits of southern Africa. His national identity as a driver has sometimes been debated—variously described as Rhodesian or South African—but he was living in Salisbury (now Harare) during his active racing years.
His breakthrough came in 1962, when he won the Rhodesian Championship driving a Cooper T53 powered by an Alfa Romeo engine. That same year, he delivered a strong performance at the Rhodesian Grand Prix, qualifying third and finishing in the same position behind Gary Hocking and Neville Lederle.
Harris then moved south to compete in a series of high-profile races. At the Rand Grand Prix, he qualified 20th in a large field of 34 cars but retired with a puncture. A week later, at the Natal Grand Prix, he again showed speed in qualifying but failed to reach the final after retiring from his heat.
Formula One appearance
Harris’s only Formula One World Championship entry came at the 1962 South African Grand Prix, the season finale that would decide the title.
His race weekend was plagued by persistent engine trouble. After multiple failed practice sessions and repeated engine rebuilds, he managed to qualify 15th. During the race, he ran steadily toward the back of the field, ahead of drivers such as Carel Godin de Beaufort and Bruce Johnstone at various stages.
However, the same mechanical issues returned. On lap 32 of the 82-lap race, while running in tenth position, Harris was forced to retire with an engine bearing failure—bringing his sole Formula One appearance to an early end.
Life after racing
Following the 1962 season, Harris gradually stepped away from competitive racing. The death of Gary Hocking at the Natal Grand Prix is believed to have influenced his decision to scale back his involvement in the sport.
He went on to build a successful business career, running Alfa Romeo and Toyota dealerships in Northern Rhodesia (later Zambia) and Zimbabwe. In later life, he retired to Durban, South Africa, where he lived with his wife, Patricia.
He passed away on 8 November 2021, remembered as part of a generation that helped shape motorsport in southern Africa.
