Formula One Career

BAR: 1999–2000

Zonta made his Formula One debut in 1999, joining the brand-new British American Racing (BAR) outfit alongside 1997 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve. The rookie season proved a harsh introduction. Early in the year, Zonta suffered a foot injury during practice for the 1999 Brazilian Grand Prix, sidelining him for three races. He returned to action but endured a heavy crash at Spa-Francorchamps and ended the year without scoring any points.

Despite the challenges, Zonta was retained for the 2000 season, and this time, progress followed. He earned his first championship point with a sixth-place finish at the season opener in Australia. Later in the year, he added points finishes in Italy and the United States. However, another major crash during a Silverstone testing session—caused by a front suspension failure—highlighted the risks of the era.

Zonta ended the season 14th in the standings. Despite outperforming expectations under the circumstances, he was replaced in 2001 by Olivier Panis.

Jordan: 2001–2002

For 2001, Zonta moved to Jordan as a third and reserve driver. He was called up twice to replace Heinz-Harald Frentzen—once due to injury, and later after Frentzen was dropped from the team. Despite filling in capably, Zonta was passed over for a full-time race seat, ending his hopes of a consistent campaign that year.

In 2002, Zonta moved to the Telefónica World Series by Nissan (the precursor to World Series by Renault), where he found redemption—winning the championship and reviving his racing career.

Toyota: 2003–2006

Zonta returned to Formula One in 2003, this time as a test driver for Toyota. He retained the role into 2004, but by mid-season, opportunity knocked. After the team parted ways with Cristiano da Matta, Zonta was called up for four Grands Prix.

In Belgium, he was on course for a standout result—running fourth with just three laps to go—when his engine failed. Despite that heartbreak, Zonta was handed a race seat for the 2004 Brazilian Grand Prix, where he finished 13th. However, Toyota had already signed Jarno Trulli for the final race in Japan, leaving Zonta to watch from the sidelines at Suzuka.

He remained with Toyota in 2005 as test and reserve driver, sharing duties with veteran Olivier Panis. When Ralf Schumacher was injured in a high-speed crash at Indianapolis, Zonta stepped in for the 2005 United States Grand Prix. Yet in one of the most infamous moments in modern F1 history, all Michelin-shod teams, including Toyota, withdrew from the race due to tyre safety concerns—meaning Zonta’s return ended before it began.

He continued as Toyota’s test driver in 2006.

Renault Role: 2007

On 6 September 2006, Renault confirmed Zonta as its official test driver for the 2007 season. He never raced again in F1.
