Wetteroth was one of the most successful and respected names of American championship racing’s pre-war era — a race-car constructor and team operation built around the vision of California-based Texan Louis “Curly” Wetteroth. Though never as internationally famous as some European marques, Wetteroth machinery became synonymous with Indianapolis success during the golden age of the Speedway.

Founded and operated by the charismatic and highly regarded Curly Wetteroth, the team earned a reputation for building tough, beautifully prepared race cars capable of surviving — and winning — the gruelling Indianapolis 500 at a time when reliability was every bit as important as outright speed.

Across the 1930s and early 1940s, Wetteroth cars became fixtures at the front of the Indianapolis grid. The team claimed victory in the Indianapolis 500 four times, an extraordinary achievement in one of motorsport’s most fiercely competitive eras.

The first triumph came in 1932, followed by another victory in 1935 as Wetteroth firmly established itself as one of the Speedway’s elite operations. Further wins followed in 1938 and again in 1941, giving the team a remarkable four Indianapolis 500 victories in less than a decade.

Although primarily associated with the American AAA Championship scene, Wetteroth also became part of Formula One history — albeit through Indianapolis’ unique connection to the world championship. When the Indianapolis 500 counted towards the FIA World Drivers’ Championship between 1950 and 1960, Wetteroth entered the 1950 Indianapolis 500, officially giving the constructor a World Championship appearance.
