Cross began his motorsport career in 1938 racing midget cars. His progress was interrupted by service in World War II, where he served as a tank commander and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during the Battle of the Bulge.
After the war, he returned to midget racing, driving one of Pappy Hough’s “Little Iron Pigs.” His performances earned him a place at the Indianapolis 500, where he made an immediate impact.
In 1952, Cross finished fifth at Indianapolis, becoming the first-ever recipient of the race’s Rookie of the Year award. The prize money from that race allowed him to purchase a farm near LaPorte.
He improved further in 1953, finishing second at the Indianapolis 500 behind Bill Vukovich. The race was run in extreme heat, during which both drivers completed the full distance without relief. Tragically, Carl Scarborough died as a result of the conditions. Cross drove the “Springfield Welding Special,” owned by Bessie Lee Paoli, who was the only female team owner in the race at the time.
Later life
After retiring from racing, Cross focused on farming and later became involved in heavy equipment and construction businesses.
He was inducted into the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame in 1992, recognising his contributions to American short-track racing.
