Titterington was born in Cultra, near Holywood. During World War II, he was educated in Scotland before attending the University of St Andrews. After returning to Northern Ireland, he began his racing career with a J2 MG in local club events.
By 1951, he had progressed to an Allard J2, and in 1952 he won the Leinster Trophy. He continued his rise with victory in the Phoenix Park Formula Libre race in 1953.
Sports car racing and Jaguar
In 1954, Titterington joined Ecurie Ecosse, achieving strong results in British club racing while also competing in his own Triumph TR2. The following year, he raced for both Ecurie Ecosse and the Jaguar works team, winning the Ulster Trophy and finishing second at the Goodwood 9 Hours.
He was present at the 1955 Le Mans disaster, having been sidelined with injury prior to the race. Titterington later criticised his teammate Mike Hawthorn for his driving into the pits, although official investigations cleared Hawthorn of responsibility.
Later in 1955, Titterington competed in the RAC Tourist Trophy at Dundrod Circuit alongside Hawthorn in a Jaguar D-Type. Although the Jaguar team was leading, a mechanical failure forced their retirement. He also drove for Mercedes-Benz at the Targa Florio, finishing fourth with co-driver John Fitch.
In 1956, Titterington was entered for the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Jaguar, but after crashing in practice and following his teammate Paul Frère’s early retirement, he did not get the chance to race.
Connaught and Formula One
Later in 1956, Titterington joined the Connaught team. On his debut at the Syracuse Grand Prix, he qualified eighth but retired with ignition problems. His only World Championship appearance came at the British Grand Prix, where he qualified 11th but retired due to engine failure.
His best result with Connaught was third place at the BRDC International Trophy, a non-championship event.
Later life
Titterington retired from motor racing at the end of 1956 to focus on his family and business interests. He died in Dundee on 13 April 2002 at the age of 73.
