Fonder established himself largely through midget and Championship Car racing, disciplines that formed the backbone of American motorsport in the 1940s and 1950s.

Across his career, Fonder made four starts in Championship Car competition, including two appearances in the legendary Indianapolis 500.

Formula One Championship

One of the more unusual moments of his career came at the 1954 Indianapolis 500. After failing to qualify his own machine for the race, Fonder still found his way onto the grid by stepping in as a relief driver for two separate teams during the event — a common practice in that era, when endurance, heat and mechanical fatigue often forced teams to rotate drivers mid-race.

His strongest Championship Car result came at the famed Langhorne Speedway in October 1949. The terrifying Pennsylvania dirt oval, notorious for its speed and danger, demanded immense bravery from drivers, and Fonder’s performance there stood as the best finish of his Champ Car career.

Away from the Indianapolis spotlight, Fonder remained heavily involved in midget-car racing, one of America’s most fiercely competitive grassroots categories. The compact, high-powered machines produced spectacular racing but were also notoriously dangerous, particularly on the tight dirt circuits where safety standards were minimal.

Death

Tragically, it was in midget racing that Fonder lost his life. On 14 June 1958, just days before what would have been his 41st birthday, he was killed in a racing accident at Hatfield, Pennsylvania.
