Ashmore began his racing career in Formula Junior in 1960 alongside his brother, Chris, continuing a family tradition of motorsport established by his father Joe and uncle Fred, the latter having also competed in several Grands Prix. He quickly showed his potential, finishing third at both Zeltweg and Innsbruck behind established stars Hans Herrmann and Wolfgang von Trips.

His performances earned him a step up to Formula One in 1961, driving a privately entered Lotus 18. One of the highlights of his career came at the Naples Grand Prix, where he secured pole position before finishing an impressive second. Later that season, Ashmore made his World Championship debut at the British Grand Prix, but his race ended in retirement after only a handful of laps.

Ashmore continued to compete in Formula One during 1962, with his final World Championship appearance coming at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. He was unable to qualify for the race, bringing his brief Formula One career to a close after four World Championship entries.

He passed away from cancer on 25 August 2021 at the age of 85.
