Born in Atlanta, Hutchison emerged during a vibrant era of American road racing, when categories such as SCCA competition provided talented drivers with a pathway to national recognition. He built his reputation through determination, technical understanding, and a willingness to compete against strong domestic and international opposition.

His finest on-track achievement came in 1967 when he won the SCCA Grand Prix Championship driving a Lotus 41. The Lotus was one of the most respected chassis of its era, and Hutchison’s title-winning campaign confirmed him as one of the leading American open-wheel drivers of the period. Winning an SCCA championship at that time required both speed and consistency, as the series attracted serious competitors and rapidly evolving machinery.

Never short on ambition, Hutchison aimed even higher in 1970 when he purchased a Brabham BT26 and entered the 1970 United States Grand Prix. It was a classic privateer move—acquiring proven machinery and taking on the world’s best with determination rather than factory resources. Competing in Formula One as an independent entrant was no small feat, particularly in an era when the sport was becoming increasingly professional and technically demanding.

Unfortunately, his Grand Prix outing ended after 21 laps when a loose fuel tank forced him to retire. While the result was brief, simply reaching the Formula One grid remains a notable accomplishment and places Hutchison among the select group of American drivers to have started a World Championship event.

As open-wheel racing in the United States evolved, so did Hutchison. When Formula A transitioned into Formula 5000, he continued competing in the powerful and popular category, driving machinery from leading constructors such as Lola and March Engineering. Formula 5000 became known for big horsepower, demanding cars, and fiercely competitive fields—an ideal environment for experienced and committed racers like Hutchison.

After stepping away from competition, Hutchison redirected his energy toward business, focusing on the growth of Solar Kinetics, a Dallas-based company.
