Paul Alexandre Belmondo is a French actor, racing driver, and former Formula One competitor whose career blended celebrity profile with genuine motorsport ambition. Best known in racing circles for his time in Formula One with March and Pacific Racing, Belmondo later built a successful second act in GT and endurance competition as both a driver and team owner.

Born in Boulogne-Billancourt, he came from one of France’s most recognisable artistic families. He is the son of the legendary actor Jean-Paul Belmondo and the grandson of the acclaimed sculptor Paul Belmondo.
Long before Formula One, he was already a familiar public figure. In the early 1980s, Belmondo attracted major media attention through his relationship with Princess Stéphanie of Monaco—ensuring cameras followed him long before lap times did.
Racing ambitions
While many assumed Belmondo’s profile came only from his surname, he pursued motorsport seriously and worked through the traditional junior categories.
Up to 1987, he competed in Formula Three and Formula 3000, the standard route toward Formula One at the time. Although he did not achieve a top-ten championship finish in either series, he remained persistent and continued to fund and develop his racing career in a highly competitive European environment.
That determination eventually earned him a place on the Formula One grid.
Formula One career
March: 1992
Belmondo joined March for the 1992 Formula One season as a pay driver.
March was operating under financial pressure and no longer the front-running force it had once been, but the seat gave Belmondo his long-awaited Grand Prix opportunity.
His best result came at the Hungarian Grand Prix, where he finished ninth.
However, the season proved difficult. Belmondo only qualified for four further races before funding ran out, after which he was replaced by Emanuele Naspetti.
Pacific Racing: 1994
Two years later, Belmondo returned to Formula One with Pacific Racing, one of the least competitive teams on the grid.
The Pacific package struggled badly for pace and reliability. Belmondo managed to qualify for only two Grands Prix and was generally outpaced by teammate Bertrand Gachot.
Though his Formula One results were modest, simply reaching the championship twice in an era of pre-qualifying pressure and deep grids was still a notable achievement.
GT and endurance racing
After Formula One, Belmondo shifted focus to categories better suited to experienced, adaptable drivers.
He found a more natural home in GT and endurance racing, competing in powerful machinery such as the Chrysler Viper GTS-R—one of the defining sports cars of its generation.
This stage of his career allowed him to remain competitive while building long-term projects, rather than focusing on the short-term instability of Formula One.
Team owner: Paul Belmondo Racing
Belmondo later founded Paul Belmondo Racing, a team that competed in both the FIA GT Championship and the Le Mans Endurance Series.
The move from driver to team owner showed a deeper commitment to motorsport than many expected from a celebrity entrant. Rather than treating racing as a side project, Belmondo invested in building a professional operation.
The team continued until folding in 2007.
