In 2006, Speed became the first American to race in Formula One since Michael Andretti in 1993, debuting at the 2006 Bahrain Grand Prix with Scuderia Toro Rosso. He started 28 Grands Prix before being replaced midway through the 2007 season by Sebastian Vettel.
After Formula One, Speed turned to stock cars, competing in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series with Team Red Bull, Whitney Motorsports, and Leavine Family Racing. Later, he reinvented himself in Global Rallycross with Andretti Autosport, winning three consecutive championships (2015, 2016, 2017). He added another major title by winning the 2018 Americas Rallycross Championship, and in 2019, he raced with Subaru Rally Team USA.

Red Bull Development & Toro Rosso: 2005–2007
Speed first appeared in F1 as a test driver for Red Bull Racing in 2005, participating in practice at the Canadian and U.S. Grands Prix — the first American presence in an F1 weekend in over a decade.
When Red Bull purchased Minardi and rebranded it as Scuderia Toro Rosso for 2006, Speed was promoted to a full-time race seat alongside Vitantonio Liuzzi.
In his rookie 2006 season, Scott Speed made his Formula One debut in Bahrain, finishing 13th. At the following round in Australia, he briefly believed he had secured his first point, only to be penalised for overtaking under yellow flags. His strongest result came at Monaco, where he finished a career-best ninth, just outside the points. Although he occasionally showed flashes of pace — including an 11th-place qualifying effort in China — inconsistency and reliability problems prevented him from breaking through.
In 2007, his results stalled amid crashes and reliability problems. His final race came at the 2007 European Grand Prix, where he spun off in wet conditions. Tensions boiled over afterwards, with reports of a confrontation with team boss Franz Tost and Speed openly criticising Toro Rosso’s management.
Before the 2007 Hungarian Grand Prix, Toro Rosso replaced him with Sebastian Vettel, then a BMW test driver. Speed later said he’d never work with Toro Rosso leadership again, but maintained ties with Red Bull, which helped fund the next chapter of his career in America.
