Whiteaway made one attempt to reach the Formula One World Championship grid. He brought his privately entered HWM to the 1955 Monaco Grand Prix but failed to qualify on the famously unforgiving street circuit. He also appeared in several non-Championship Formula One races.

His finest international result came away from single-seaters. At the 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans, Whiteaway shared Mrs Waugh’s AC Ace-Bristol with John Turner. The pairing won the two-litre category and finished an impressive seventh overall, giving Whiteaway a class victory at endurance racing’s greatest event.
