Alex Albon and Lily Muni He compete in very different sports, but their relationship began when each took an interest in the other’s world.
The Formula 1 driver and professional golfer began dating in 2019 after connecting on social media. What started with following each other’s careers eventually led to a meeting in Los Angeles, where a round of golf helped bring them together.

Lily Muni He was born in Chengdu, China, in 1999. Her family moved to Vancouver, Canada, when she was nine years old before later settling in San Diego, California.
Her interest in golf began much earlier. Introduced to the sport by her father, she started playing at five and spent much of her childhood developing her game.
Lily has explained that balancing school with competitive golf required sacrifices. With limited time for everything, she kept her ambition of becoming a professional player at the centre of her decisions.

She played college golf before pursuing a professional career
After high school, Lily attended the University of Southern California, where she studied communications and played on the women’s golf team.
She later put her studies on hold to concentrate on golf full-time, making the move into the professional game while still a teenager.
According to her LPGA biography, Lily claimed her first professional victory in 2018. The following year, she finished first at the LPGA Q-Series to secure her tour membership for the 2020 season.

Although Lily had been interested in cars since middle school, Formula 1 only caught her attention after she watched Netflix’s Drive to Survive.
The series encouraged her to learn more about the championship and follow several drivers on social media, including Albon.
At around the same time, Albon was developing an interest in golf. He watched tournaments and online videos, followed Lily and began keeping track of her results as she followed his progress in Formula 1.
Their shared curiosity eventually led to an in-person meeting in Los Angeles after Albon had raced in Texas. They played golf together, and their relationship grew from there.

While their sporting interests helped them connect, Lily has admitted that understanding Albon’s humour took a little longer.
Speaking to Golfweek in 2021, she described him as funny but explained that his British sense of humour was initially unfamiliar to her.

With separate sporting calendars taking them around the world, Lily and Albon cannot always be in the same place.
However, Albon has explained that time apart also gives them room to focus on their own development. Both understand the hours of individual work their careers require.

Discussing the games with GQ in 2023, Albon joked: “I’m still losing, but I’m losing less.” For the couple, the games provide another way to spend time together when their schedules keep them apart.

Golf helped start their relationship, and it remains something Lily and Albon enjoy sharing when they have time together.
Being in a relationship with a professional golfer does not necessarily make improving your swing straightforward, however.
Albon has joked that Lily sometimes struggles to know where to begin when he asks for advice. As he explained to Golfweek, playing professionally and coaching someone who needs help with almost every part of their swing are different challenges.

Away from her relationship with Albon, Lily has used interviews to discuss the challenges facing women in her sport.
Speaking to Tatler Asia, she highlighted differences in earnings and sponsorship opportunities between male and female golfers. She also questioned why a woman’s appearance can influence how people judge her sporting ability.
Lily argued that female players should be recognised for their performance without their looks being treated as a reason to doubt their talent.
She also expressed an interest in seeing collaboration between LPGA and PGA tournaments, pointing towards greater connections between the women’s and men’s games.
A relationship built around two sporting careers
For Lily and Albon, supporting one another means understanding that their own competitions, training and travel sometimes have to come first.
