Alan Permane has spent more than three decades at the heart of Formula One, building a reputation as one of the sport’s most experienced and respected engineers. His career has spanned multiple championship-winning eras, team transformations and senior leadership roles, with a journey that has taken him from the garage floor to the position of Team Principal.

Benetton
Permane’s Formula One career began in 1989 when he joined the Benetton F1 Team as a test electronics engineer. From the outset, he established himself as a key technical figure within the Enstone-based operation, developing the expertise and attention to detail that would define his career.
In 1996, he was promoted to junior race engineer, working alongside Jean Alesi, before stepping into the role of race engineer the following year. Between 1997 and 2006, Permane worked directly with several leading Formula One drivers, including Jarno Trulli and Giancarlo Fisichella, while the team evolved from Benetton into Renault F1. During this period, he played an important role in race strategy, car performance and trackside operations as Renault emerged as one of Formula One’s strongest competitors.
Renault
His responsibilities continued to grow, and in 2007 he was appointed Chief Race Engineer for Renault F1. In this senior role, Permane oversaw the team’s race engineering department, helping to coordinate performance across race weekends while mentoring engineers and supporting the team’s technical development.
By 2011, his experience had earned him promotion to Chief Operating Officer, adding broader management responsibilities to his already extensive technical remit. A year later, he became Sporting Director when the team was competing as Lotus F1. It was a position he would continue to hold as the Enstone outfit underwent further changes, first returning to Renault F1 and later becoming the Alpine F1 Team. Throughout these transitions, Permane remained a constant presence, providing continuity, leadership and invaluable Formula One experience during periods of significant organisational change.
After more than 34 years with the Enstone organisation, Permane departed Alpine following the 2023 Belgian Grand Prix, bringing to an end one of the longest-serving careers with a single Formula One team.
Racing Bulls
A new chapter began in 2024 when he joined Visa Cash App RB Formula One Team as Racing Director, bringing decades of race engineering and operational expertise to the Red Bull sister team. His impact was immediate, and midway through the 2025 Formula One season he was promoted to Team Principal following a major management reshuffle within the Red Bull organisation. Christian Horner departed Oracle Red Bull Racing, with Laurent Mekies moving from Racing Bulls to lead the senior team, paving the way for Permane to take charge of Racing Bulls.
Today, as Team Principal of Racing Bulls, Alan Permane combines world-class engineering knowledge with decades of leadership experience, guiding the team both on and off the circuit. His career is a testament to technical excellence, consistency and an ability to adapt and succeed through every era of modern Formula One.
