Lando Norris topped a lively final practice session at the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix, laying down a 1m11.799s lap to edge out Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Mercedes’ George Russell in the last hour of track time before qualifying. On a sun-drenched Saturday in Montreal, the session delivered the kind of intensity and unpredictability fans have come to expect from this season’s fiercely contested 2025 F1 World Championship.
What To Know?
- Norris Quickest: Lando Norris topped FP3 with a 1m11.799s, edging Leclerc and Russell in a tight final session before qualifying.
- Piastri Crashes: Championship leader Oscar Piastri hit the wall at the final chicane, causing a red flag and ending his session early.
- Ferrari Fightback: Leclerc bounced back from Friday’s woes to take P2, while Hamilton placed fourth in a strong session for the Scuderia.
For Leclerc, it was a much-needed rebound after a turbulent Friday. The Ferrari driver missed the majority of FP1 due to a crash and sat out FP2 altogether while his chassis was replaced. But with the SF-25 back in one piece, he immediately showed pace—setting the early benchmark on medium tyres before switching to softs and ultimately finishing just 0.082s off Norris. Meanwhile, Russell continued Mercedes’ encouraging Canadian form, slotting into third with a 1m11.950s.

Not everyone escaped FP3 unscathed. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, the current championship leader, brushed the wall at the final chicane and suffered a puncture that ended his session early. Moments later, Kick Sauber’s Nico Hülkenberg lost control at the same spot and spun into the barriers, prompting a brief red flag to clear debris. Both drivers eventually made it back out, but Piastri could only manage P8 on the timing screens—an unusually low-key showing from the front-runner.
Max Verstappen, who continues to wrestle with brake issues on his Red Bull, finished fifth on the soft compound, complaining again about a lack of braking “bite.” Hamilton followed in sixth, making it two Ferraris in the top four after temporarily holding second early in the session. Fernando Alonso took seventh for Aston Martin, while rookie Kimi Antonelli backed up Mercedes’ strong showing with P9.
The Williams pair of Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon rounded out the top ten, while Alpine’s Pierre Gasly was sandwiched between Racing Bulls teammates Isack Hadjar and Liam Lawson just outside the top 10. Further down the order, Lance Stroll continued to get back up to speed after wrist surgery, placing 14th ahead of Haas duo Ollie Bearman and Esteban Ocon.
Franco Colapinto enjoyed a much cleaner session than Friday to go P17, followed by Hülkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto in the Kick Saubers. Yuki Tsunoda finished slowest after spending most of FP3 in the garage and will be investigated post-session for a red flag infringement, as will Bortoleto.
With just hours to go before qualifying, the competitive picture remains wide open. McLaren may have the one-lap edge, but Mercedes and Ferrari are firmly in the mix—and with variable weather still looming, the fight for pole could be a chaotic showdown in the 2025 F1 World Championship.
