Current & Historic F1 Drivers

Formula 1 has featured hundreds of drivers since the World Championship began in 1950, from one-race entrants to all-time greats like Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher, Juan Manuel Fangio, and Ayrton Senna.

  • How many drivers have raced in Formula 1?

As of the 2026 Australian Grand Prix, 782 Formula One drivers from 41 different nationalities have started at least one FIA World Championship race.

  • Who has won the most Formula 1 world championships?

Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher share the record for the most Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championships, with seven titles each.

  • Which F1 driver has the most race wins?

Lewis Hamilton holds the record for the most Formula 1 Grand Prix victories, with 105 wins. He also leads several other major career categories, including pole positions, podiums, and points.

  • Which Formula 1 driver has entered the most Grands Prix?

Fernando Alonso holds the record for the most Grand Prix entries in Formula 1 history, with over 430, and the most race starts, with over 425.

  • Which country has produced the most Formula 1 drivers?

Drivers from 41 countries have entered a Formula One World Championship race. The United Kingdom has the highest representation with 164 drivers. The United States is second with 160 drivers; however, between 1950 and 1960, the Indianapolis 500 counted towards the World Championship. That race was rarely contested by drivers from outside the United States and was not sanctioned by the FIA; instead, it was run by AAA (1950–1955) and USAC (1956–1960). Excluding Indianapolis-only entrants, 58 American drivers have started FIA-sanctioned World Championship races.

Italy ranks third with 100 drivers.

Drivers from nine of these countries took part in the first World Championship race, the 1950 British Grand Prix. The most recent country to be represented is China, after Zhou Guanyu made his debut at the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix.

Statistics are accurate as of the 2026 Australian Grand Prix.

  • Who was the most recent new Formula 1 driver?

The most recent driver to make a Formula 1 World Championship debut was Arvid Lindblad, who debuted at the 2026 Australian Grand Prix.

  • Are Indianapolis 500 drivers included in Formula 1 driver lists?

Yes. Driver totals for Formula 1 history usually include the Indianapolis 500 entrants from 1950 to 1960, because that race counted toward the World Championship during that period, even though it was not run to Formula One regulations.

  • Who are the most successful Formula 1 drivers of all time?

The most successful F1 drivers are usually measured by world titles, race wins, pole positions, podiums, points, and longevity. Names consistently at the top include Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher, Juan Manuel Fangio, Alain Prost, Sebastian Vettel, Max Verstappen, and Ayrton Senna.

  • How are Formula 1 driver stats measured?

Formula 1 driver statistics are usually tracked using categories such as race entries, race starts, championships, wins, pole positions, podiums, fastest laps, and points. Some stats also separate modern FIA-sanctioned race starts from older Indianapolis 500 championship entries.

  • Where can I compare current F1 drivers with past legends?

The best way to compare modern F1 drivers with historic greats is through a mix of career records, championship totals, win percentages, poles, podiums, and era context. On our site, that comparison naturally sits between the Drivers hub, Driver Records, and major history features, such as the best of articles.

The 2026 season introduces significant regulatory changes, including a new power unit formula and the introduction of active aerodynamics. Audi officially enters Formula One as a factory team following its acquisition of Sauber in 2024, developing and running its own power units. Cadillac makes its debut in Formula One, powered by Ferrari engines, becoming the series’ eleventh team—the first expansion since Haas in 2016. While Arvid Lindblad joins as the only F1 rookie with Racing Bulls.

  • All Eyes on Norris and McLaren

Max Verstappen remains the benchmark; he was by far the best driver of the 2025 season, despite not winning the title. But with 8 wins, the most of any driver over the season, as well as most poles and laps led, he remains the absolute benchmark. But with Lando Norris securing the title, and McLaren defending theirs with back-to-back Constructors’ titles, can the team and driver carry that form into a new refulation change? Time will tell.

  • Looking back at 2025

Twenty drivers. One world title. The 2025 Formula 1 season was locked and loaded with a grid full of talent, ambition, and exciting racing storylines sure to unfold as the season progresses. At the centre of it all? Max Verstappen is chasing a historic fifth world championship in his RBB21.

2024 marked a turning point in Formula 1. Red Bull’s years of dominance took a hit, and with the grid reshuffled for 2025, the title fight was wide open. Could this be the year we saw a new name at the top?

The off-season didn’t disappoint. It all started with the bombshell move—Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari, instantly reshaping the grid. Red Bull and Racing Bulls faced their own shakeups, eventually announcing Liam Lawson as Verstappen’s new teammate to replace the outgoing Sergio Perez. Although that only lasted for two races, Yuki Tsunoda swapped seats with Lawson, finally making it to the main team for his home race at the 2025 Japanese Grand Prix.

But that wasn’t all. Five rookies made their F1 debut in 2025:

    Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes)
    Jack Doohan (Alpine)
    Oliver Bearman (Haas)
    Isack Hadjar (Racing Bulls)
    Gabriel Bortoleto (Sauber)

The new generation brought some exciting promise, and all eyes would be on who rose fastest through the ranks.

Max Verstappen remained the benchmark, but with increased competition from McLaren, rising stars, and fresh team lineups, 2025 was shaping up to be the most unpredictable season in decades. Would it be Max’s fifth title win, or would a new champion emerge?
