Early career

Langes began his motorsport career in karting and achieved an important early success in 1978 by winning the Italian 125cc karting championship.

He later progressed into single-seater racing, competing in Formula Three before moving into Formula 3000. His best result in the category came in 1989, when he finished second at Pergusa-Enna while driving a Lola Formula 3000 car.

That performance helped support his move into Formula One for the following season.

Formula One career

Langes joined EuroBrun for the 1990 Formula One season, partnering Roberto Moreno. The team was operating with extremely limited resources and struggled badly for pace throughout the year.

Under the pre-qualifying system then in use, Langes was required to earn a place in the main qualifying session at each event. He entered 14 Grands Prix but failed to pre-qualify for every one of them, a record for the greatest number of World Championship entries without progressing beyond pre-qualifying.

The only cars regularly slower were the troubled Life entries of Gary Brabham and Bruno Giacomelli and, on some occasions, Bertrand Gachot‘s Coloni. Langes was also generally several seconds behind Moreno, although EuroBrun’s financial and technical difficulties placed both drivers at a severe disadvantage.

The team eventually withdrew from the championship before the end of the season, bringing Langes’s Formula One career to a close without a race start.

Later career

After leaving Formula One, Langes continued racing in touring cars. Although he never returned to Grand Prix competition, his career included success in karting and a lengthy progression through several of Europe’s leading junior single-seater categories.
