Jean Lucas was a French racing driver, team manager, and influential motorsport figure whose career extended far beyond a single Formula One start. Though officially recorded as having entered just one World Championship Grand Prix, Lucas was a respected driver in post-war sports car racing and later helped shape French motorsport journalism as one of the founders of Sport Auto.

Born in France in 1917, Lucas belonged to the generation whose sporting careers were interrupted and reshaped by the Second World War. When European racing resumed in the late 1940s, he quickly established himself as a capable and dependable driver, particularly in endurance and sports car competition.
His finest results came behind the wheel of a Ferrari in 1949, a breakthrough year that established him among the notable French racers of the period. That season, Lucas claimed victories at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps and Autodrome de Linas-Montlhéry. To win at Spa demanded bravery and stamina on one of Europe’s fastest road circuits, while success at Montlhéry underlined his versatility closer to home. Together, those triumphs marked the peak of his competitive driving career.
As the 1950s progressed, Lucas became closely associated with Gordini, one of France’s proudest racing operations. By 1955, he was serving as team manager, trusted not only for his experience behind the wheel but also for his organisational understanding of racing at the highest level.
That same year brought his sole Formula One World Championship appearance. At the Italian Grand Prix on 11 September 1955, regular Gordini driver Robert Manzon was unable to compete, and Lucas stepped in as a late replacement. It was an unusual route onto the Grand Prix grid: not an emerging young hopeful, but an established team manager answering the call when needed.
Unfortunately, his race ended prematurely when the car suffered engine failure, leaving him without championship points. While the result was brief and unrewarding statistically, it perfectly illustrated Lucas’s value to Gordini—experienced, dependable, and willing to do whatever was required for the team.
Lucas continued racing into the latter half of the decade before retiring in 1957 after a crash at the Moroccan Grand Prix. By then, he had already begun transitioning into another role that would prove just as significant: helping document and promote the sport he had lived from the inside.
As one of the founders of Sport Auto, Lucas played a key part in developing one of France’s best-known motoring publications. The magazine became an important voice in racing coverage, blending technical insight, reporting, and enthusiasm for motorsport culture. Few people were better suited to that task than a man who had raced Ferraris, managed Grand Prix teams, and understood the sport from every angle.
Jean Lucas died on 27 September 2003 at the age of 86.
