Gugelmin was born in Joinville and began karting at the age of seven, winning numerous regional and national titles. He moved to the United Kingdom in 1982 to pursue a professional racing career, sharing a house with future world champion Ayrton Senna.
He quickly rose through the ranks, winning the British Formula Ford Championship and later the European title. In 1985, he claimed the British Formula Three Championship and also won the Macau Grand Prix, mirroring Senna’s earlier success.
Formula One career
Gugelmin entered Formula One in 1988 with March Engineering. In his rookie season, he scored points at the British and Hungarian Grands Prix driving the Adrian Newey-designed car.
He remained with the team—later renamed Leyton House—through 1991. His best Formula One result came at the 1989 Brazilian Grand Prix, where he finished third, securing his only podium. Despite flashes of pace, including a fastest lap at the French Grand Prix, inconsistent machinery limited his results.
In 1992, he moved to Jordan Grand Prix, but struggled with reliability and failed to score points, leaving Formula One at the end of the season.
CART / IndyCar career
Gugelmin transitioned to CART racing in North America in 1993. Over nine seasons, he competed in 147 races, achieving eight podium finishes and one victory at the Molson Indy Vancouver in 1997. That same year, he finished a career-best fourth in the championship standings.
At the Indianapolis 500, his best result came in 1995, where he finished sixth after leading 59 laps.
He also set a world record for the fastest lap on a closed circuit at California Speedway in 1997, reaching an average speed of over 240 mph (387 km/h).
Retirement and later life
Gugelmin retired from professional racing at the end of 2001, following personal tragedy and a series of serious accidents. He later returned to Brazil, where he became involved in business ventures, including work with automotive companies such as AMG.
