When Mike Thackwell arrived on the Formula 1 grid, he wasn’t just another rookie; he was a teenage prodigy on the fast track to stardom. Having already turned heads in junior categories, Thackwell became one of the youngest drivers ever to qualify for a Grand Prix, making his first official start at the 1980 Canadian Grand Prix at just 19 years old. Though his time in F1 was brief — five entries, two starts, and no points — his name remains a cult favourite among fans of the sport’s wilder, less predictable era.

The First Chance: Arrows at Zandvoort
Thackwell’s first brush with F1 came almost by accident. It was 1980, and the young Kiwi had been testing for Tyrrell, learning the ropes under Ken Tyrrell’s watchful eye. Then, at Zandvoort, fate intervened. Arrows boss Jackie Oliver found himself without a fit driver after Jochen Mass was sidelined by injury, and spotted Thackwell in the paddock.
Despite the car being set up for Mass (complete with his seat and pedal positions), Thackwell jumped in and took on the Arrows A3. He didn’t make the grid for the 1980 Dutch Grand Prix, but his performance in practice, quicker than Keke Rosberg’s Fittipaldi, was enough to make people take notice.
The Almost Record-Breaking Debut
A few weeks later, Thackwell’s F1 debut came at Montreal. Tyrrell entered a third car for him at the 1980 Canadian Grand Prix, making him, for a long time, the youngest driver ever to start a Formula 1 race. But there’s a twist.
On lap one, chaos erupted: Alan Jones and Nelson Piquet collided, triggering a pile-up that took out both Tyrrells of Jean-Pierre Jarier and Derek Daly. Thackwell, miraculously unscathed, brought his car back to the pits only for the race to be red-flagged. With both of his teammates’ cars wrecked, Ken Tyrrell told him to hand over his car to Jarier for the restart. Because the race technically began anew, the record books list Thackwell as a non-starter, though he’d done everything short of actually racing.

It’s a piece of racing trivia that still sparks debate: was Thackwell the youngest F1 starter? Officially, no. But for those who know the story, it’s hard not to give him the nod. (That “youngest ever” title eventually passed to Jaime Alguersuari in 2009, and later to Max Verstappen in 2015.)
A Frustrating Return
Thackwell’s next shot came at Watkins Glen for the 1980 United States Grand Prix, once again with Tyrrell. Unfortunately, a fractured brake disc during qualifying ended his weekend early and with it, his first stint in F1. He returned to the junior ranks the following year, where he would go on to dominate Formula 2.
Back in the Big League
After a few seasons of rebuilding his reputation and collecting trophies, Thackwell found himself back in F1 paddocks in 1984. First, he was called up by the RAM team to replace Jonathan Palmer at the 1984 Canadian Grand Prix. He qualified 25th, ahead of teammate Philippe Alliot, but a failed turbo wastegate ended his race on lap 30.
Later that year, Tyrrell offered him another lifeline, this time for the 1984 German Grand Prix at Hockenheim. Despite missing out on qualifying by a heartbreaking 0.055 seconds, Thackwell’s speed impressed once again.
He also tested for Williams that season, but the right full-time seat never came. Formula 1 had seen flashes of his pace, but the stars simply refused to align.
