1975 F1 World Championship

Season Summary

The 1975 FIA Formula One World Championship began on 12 January and concluded on 5 October, over 14 race weekends. In addition to the championship rounds, the year also included three non-championship Formula One races and the nine-round South African Formula One Championship.

Season

Heading into the new season, Brabham were widely considered favourites after finishing the 1974 season strongly. Their prospects appeared promising when Carlos Pace delivered an emotional victory at his home race in São Paulo. However, the team’s performance was frequently compromised by excessive tyre wear, and the early promise shown by the cars could not be sustained across the season.

Instead, the year belonged to Niki Lauda and Ferrari. In only his second season with the Italian team, Lauda drove the Ferrari 312T, a car that proved technically superior to its competitors and quickly became the benchmark of the grid. Lauda dominated the championship, winning five races and building a commanding lead in the standings to secure the first World Drivers’ Championship of his career. Ferrari also secured the Manufacturers’ Championship, completing a highly successful season for the team. Reflecting on his breakthrough campaign, Lauda later described 1975 as “the unbelievable year.”

Despite on-track success, the season was overshadowed by tragedy. In August, American driver Mark Donohue died two days after suffering injuries in a practice crash at the Austrian Grand Prix. His death was a significant loss to the motorsport community. The accident also marked a sombre milestone in F1 history: 1975 would be the final season in which a driver lost his life in a wet-weather accident until the death of Jules Bianchi following injuries sustained at the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix.

Further tragedy followed after the conclusion of the racing season. In late November, an aircraft owned by the Embassy Hill racing team crashed in England, killing all six people on board. Among those who lost their lives were team owner Graham Hill, the two-time Formula One World Champion, and promising young driver Tony Brise. The accident brought a heartbreaking end to a season that had already been marked by both remarkable sporting achievement and devastating loss.
