The Klenk-Meteor was a one-off Formula One racing car that appeared in the 1954 German Grand Prix. Although entered under the Klenk-Meteor name, the car was effectively the final evolution of a Veritas Formula Two machine, representing the closing chapter of one of post-war Germany’s most respected racing manufacturers.
Originally intended to be driven by German racer Hans Klenk, the car ultimately competed with Theo Helfrich at the wheel. Its World Championship appearance proved short-lived, however, as engine failure forced its retirement after just eight laps.

Origins
The Klenk-Meteor’s story began with Veritas, the German manufacturer that enjoyed considerable success between 1948 and 1953. The company established a strong reputation by producing competitive sports cars and highly successful Formula Two racers, becoming one of the leading names in German motorsport during the immediate post-war years.
Veritas’ fortunes changed when the company’s founder, Ernst Loof, became seriously ill, bringing development to a standstill. The manufacturer ceased operations in 1953, and Loof passed away three years later in 1956.
1954 German Grand Prix
Although Veritas had closed its doors, one of its Formula Two chassis found an unlikely second life. The car entered for the 1954 German Grand Prix under the Klenk-Meteor name was essentially a Veritas Formula Two car carried over from the previous season, adapted for a Formula One World Championship appearance.
The car was owned and prepared by accomplished German racing driver Hans Klenk, who originally intended to compete in the Grand Prix himself. Those plans were abandoned after Klenk suffered serious injuries in an accident while working as a test driver for Mercedes-Benz, bringing his racing career to an abrupt end.
With Klenk unable to drive, fellow German Theo Helfrich took over driving duties for the Nürburgring event. The Klenk-Meteor’s sole Formula One World Championship appearance ended prematurely when engine failure forced Helfrich to retire on lap eight.
