Origins

Bob Pankratz established the constructor after building a reputation as both a racing driver and car builder in American open-wheel racing. His cars were designed specifically for Indianapolis competition, where independent constructors regularly challenged the major manufacturers during the 1950s.

Formula One

Between 1950 and 1960, the Indianapolis 500 formed part of the FIA Formula One World Championship, allowing American Indy constructors such as Pankratz to officially compete in the championship despite never contesting the European Grand Prix part of the season.

Pankratz made its World Championship debut at the 1954 Indianapolis 500 with Jimmy Reece behind the wheel. Reece qualified an impressive seventh on the grid, the constructor’s best qualifying performance, before finishing 17th after completing the race.

The team returned for the 1955 Indianapolis 500, again with Reece driving. He qualified 15th but retired from the race with engine failure, bringing Pankratz’s Formula One career to an end.
