Bill Vukovich won the 1954 Indianapolis 500 from nineteenth on the grid, successfully defending his title. His patient progress through the field and the pit-stop cycle carried him to a second consecutive victory in a race that featured extensive use of relief drivers.

Championship background
Juan Manuel Fangio arrived at round 2 leading the 1954 F1 World Championship on 8 points, with Nino Farina on 6.
Race entries
Vukovich returned in the same established car, but his team found it harder to achieve competitive qualifying speed. The entire starting field used Offenhauser engines, an Indianapolis first. The event counted towards the World Drivers’ Championship under AAA regulations, independently of the new Grand Prix engine formula.
May practice
The defending winner’s preparations were less straightforward than his reputation suggested. Vukovich’s two-year-old car proved difficult to bring up to the required speed, leaving the team facing a race from well down the field. Indianapolis’s extended practice month and four-lap trials offered a very different preparation pattern from the European Grands Prix.
Pole Day time trials
McGrath claimed pole with a four-lap average of 141.033 mph. The complete run mattered, rather than a single quick lap, and first-day priority secured his position at the head of the field. Vukovich’s eventual nineteenth starting place underlined the scale of the task facing the defending winner.
Second-day time trials
The qualifying programme continued into its second scheduled day. Successful entrants followed those who had qualified on Pole Day under Indianapolis’s day-priority system. The consulted account does not provide a separate detailed narrative of this day’s attempts.
Third-day time trials
The second weekend offered further opportunities to complete the thirty-three-car field. Each entrant still needed a full four-lap run; the published final grid is retained without inventing unavailable daily results or incidents.
Final-day time trials
Scott found another car after being bumped and began a promising late attempt. Confused by the flags and the low sun, he mistakenly returned to the pits after three laps instead of four. The incomplete run cost him a place, leaving Eddie Johnson as first alternate.
Qualifying Classification
Indianapolis used four-lap averages and qualifying-day priority. Relief drivers are listed in the race results without being incorrectly credited as qualifiers; shared finishing points are divided exactly.
Non-qualifying entries and alternates
This list includes unsuccessful entries, withdrawals and alternates; some drivers later qualified another car or drove relief. R denotes a rookie and W a previous Indianapolis winner.

What happened in the 1954 Indianapolis 500?
Vukovich worked forward from the seventh row and first reached the lead on lap 61. Pit stops repeatedly changed the order, requiring him to rebuild his position rather than simply control the race from the outset.
He led again during the middle stages, then took command for the final time on lap 150. The closing fifty laps completed his successful title defence at a record average race speed.
Bryan finished second and McGrath third, with the pole-sitter also earning the fastest-lap point. Ruttman and Carter shared fourth, and Nazaruk finished fifth. The many relief drives are preserved in the full classification, including those outside the points.
After the race, Juan Manuel Fangio headed the drivers’ standings with 8 points, followed by Bill Vukovich on 8.
