Championship background
Juan Manuel Fangio arrived at round 8 leading the 1954 F1 World Championship on 42 points, with José Froilán González on 23 9/14.
Race entries
Ascari returned to Ferrari for this race with Lancia‘s permission, adding a major challenge to Mercedes. Moss had factory Maserati support, while Villoresi also looked competitive. Mercedes compared streamlined and open-wheel cars, and Collins continued Vanwall‘s development with its smaller engine.
Friday timed practice
Mercedes established that its streamlined cars were quicker at Monza, with Fangio setting the pace. Ferrari‘s preparations involved extensive car-sharing while the factory completed its entries, and Ascari received particular attention. Maserati showed encouraging speed through Moss and Villoresi. The Vanwall had carburettor trouble but remained competitive enough to justify its development outing.
Saturday final qualifying
Intense heat delayed serious efforts until later in the afternoon. Herrmann won Mercedes‘ internal contest for its third race seat, while Ferrari completed its car allocation. Moss produced a late 1:59.3, only for Ascari to beat him by a tenth on his final lap. Fangio’s Friday time still secured pole, leaving Mercedes, Ferrari and Maserati represented on the front row.
Qualifying Classification
Friday and Saturday timed practice established the grid on Monza‘s road circuit. Earlier team testing was distinct from those official sessions; the banked combined circuit would not enter championship use until the following year.

What happened in the 1954 Italian Grand Prix?
Mercedes led initially, but Ascari soon challenged and the leading cars exchanged positions in a close contest. González retired his original Ferrari and later shared Maglioli’s car. Villoresi also threatened before his Maserati‘s clutch failed.
Moss moved ahead of Fangio and Ascari, demonstrating the Maserati‘s speed. Ascari then retired with engine trouble, and Moss built a useful advantage before oil-system trouble forced him into the pits and ultimately ended his challenge.
Fangio inherited the victory, with Hawthorn second and González and Maglioli sharing third. Herrmann finished fourth and Mantovani fifth. González earned the fastest-lap point. The champion had won again, but Ascari and Moss had made Monza a much sterner contest than a simple Mercedes procession.
After the race, Juan Manuel Fangio headed the drivers’ standings with 42 points, followed by José Froilán González on 25 1/7.
