Born in Buenos Aires on 5 June 1923, Jorge Alberto Daponte was part of the wave of Argentine drivers who emerged during the nation’s golden era of motorsport in the 1950s. Racing at a time when Argentina had become one of the world’s great hubs for Grand Prix competition, Daponte pursued his Formula One ambitions alongside some of the sport’s most celebrated names.

Daponte developed his career in the fiercely competitive South American racing scene, where road races, endurance events, and Grand Prix machinery regularly attracted huge crowds and passionate support.
His Formula One World Championship career consisted of two Grand Prix, making his debut on 17 January 1954. Although he never scored championship points, earning a place on the Formula One grid during the highly competitive 1950s was an achievement in itself. The period was dominated by legendary figures such as Juan Manuel Fangio, Alberto Ascari, and José Froilán González, with opportunities for independent and emerging drivers often limited.
In addition to his World Championship appearances, Daponte also competed in several non-championship Formula One races, which at the time formed an important part of the F1 calendar. These events frequently featured strong grids and gave privateers and regional drivers opportunities to compete against established factory teams and Grand Prix stars.
Death
Tragically, Jorge Daponte died on 9 March 1963 at the age of 39. Reports surrounding his death suggested the possibility of suicide.
