Championship background
Juan Manuel Fangio arrived at round 9 leading the 1954 F1 World Championship on 42 points, with José Froilán González on 25 1/7.
Race entries
Lancia finally arrived with the D50 for Ascari and Villoresi. Ferrari had only Hawthorn and Trintignant available, with González still recovering from injury, but brought a revised Squalo for Hawthorn. Mercedes and Maserati fielded strong opposition, and Collins arrived with Vanwall‘s full 2.5-litre engine.
Thursday timed practice
Lancia immediately looked formidable, with Ascari and Villoresi quickest. Hawthorn’s Ferrari had revised front suspension, while Mercedes continued comparing bodywork options. Moss, Collins and Hawthorn all spun at the same corner; Collins overturned the Vanwall without injury, but the damage forced its withdrawal. Ascari’s 2:18.1 established the eventual pole time.
Friday final qualifying
Ascari remained fastest, although Fangio moved closer in the open-wheel Mercedes. Hawthorn improved after his earlier accident, while Moss tried different Maseratis without finding the pace he wanted. Lancia completed substantial running with its spare car and appeared reliable, encouraging expectations that its race debut could match its qualifying performance.

Thursday and Friday timed practice established the grid, with Saturday reserved for other events. The article and season calendar cover only the championship Grand Prix.

What happened in the 1954 Spanish Grand Prix?
The Lancias soon retired: Villoresi with brake trouble and Ascari with clutch problems after showing the car’s speed at the front. Schell and Trintignant also featured before their challenges ended. Loose newspapers blocked cooling openings on several cars, contributing to overheating trouble.
Hawthorn emerged in command as the race settled into a contest with Fangio. The Mercedes developed an oil problem, allowing Musso to move into second. Hawthorn kept his revised Ferrari going strongly to the finish.
Musso finished second, Fangio third, Mieres fourth and Kling fifth. Ascari retained the fastest-lap point despite his early retirement. Fangio’s championship was already secure, but Ferrari ended the season with a victory and Lancia had given a clear warning of its potential.
After the race, Juan Manuel Fangio headed the drivers’ standings with 42 points, followed by José Froilán González on 25 1/7.
