Mercedes made a spectacular championship debut in the 1954 French Grand Prix, with Fangio and Kling finishing just a tenth of a second apart. The streamlined W196 proved ideally suited to Reims, leaving the opposition to fight for the remaining places.

Championship background
Juan Manuel Fangio arrived at round 4 leading the 1954 F1 World Championship on 17 points, with Maurice Trintignant on 9.
Race entries
Fangio moved from Maserati to Mercedes alongside Kling and Herrmann. With Lancia still unready, Ascari and Villoresi joined Maserati for the race. Ferrari‘s challenge rested on González, Hawthorn and Trintignant, while private entrants and Gordini completed the field.
Wednesday timed practice
Mercedes immediately attracted attention with its streamlined cars, and Fangio exceeded a 200 km/h lap average. The performance was impressive despite intermittent engine cutting linked to the sensitive fuel-injection system. Only a few rivals were ready for the opening period, including the private Maseratis and an HWM under development.
Thursday timed practice
Ascari quickly adapted to the Maserati and emerged as a serious challenger, despite little familiarity with the car. Fangio again demonstrated Mercedes‘ pace, while the works Ferraris had still not appeared. The contrast between the two leading drivers in unfamiliar machinery was one of the session’s most striking features.
Friday final qualifying
Ferrari finally joined the contest. González was immediately competitive, but rain interrupted Hawthorn’s attempt after a gearing change. Kling improved substantially despite a radiator problem, while Ascari secured a front-row place. Mercedes removed trim from its noses to help cooling, and Fangio’s opening-day benchmark remained enough for pole.
Qualifying Classification
Three evening sessions, Wednesday through Friday, established the grid. Changes at Thillois made direct comparison with earlier Reims lap records inappropriate.

What happened in the 1954 French Grand Prix?
Fangio and Kling led away and established Mercedes‘ control. Ascari’s Maserati retired almost immediately, while Ferrari could not sustain the leaders’ pace. González and Hawthorn both suffered mechanical failures, removing the main Italian challenge.
Herrmann set fastest lap before his own Mercedes retired. Fangio and Kling continued closely together, comfortably ahead of the surviving opposition, and crossed the line separated by just a tenth of a second.
Manzon finished third in his Ferrari, with Bira fourth and Villoresi fifth in Maseratis. Only six cars finished. Fangio added another victory to his earlier Maserati successes, while Mercedes had announced its arrival with an emphatic one-two.
After the race, Juan Manuel Fangio headed the drivers’ standings with 25 points, followed by Maurice Trintignant on 9.
