Championship background
Juan Manuel Fangio arrived at round 5 leading the 1954 F1 World Championship on 25 points, with Maurice Trintignant on 9.
Race entries
Mercedes brought only Fangio and Kling, retaining the streamlined bodywork that had excelled at Reims. Ferrari fielded González, Hawthorn and Trintignant, while Ascari and Villoresi again drove Maseratis. A large supporting field included British private entries and Collins in the developing Vanwall.
Thursday timed practice
Wet conditions limited the first session. Mercedes began adapting to a very different circuit from Reims, while several rivals were not yet ready: Gordini‘s drivers were absent and the works Maserati transporters had gone to the wrong French port. The delays would leave some leading entrants with much less useful preparation than planned.
Friday morning qualifying
Fangio broke the 100 mph lap-average barrier with 1:45.0, though contact with a marker drum hinted at the visibility problems of the streamlined car. González and Hawthorn were close behind, with Moss also quick. Ferrari used its earlier chassis with updated engines, while Collins showed promise in the Vanwall.
Friday additional practice
The works Maseratis arrived around midday and received a special opportunity to practise. Rain prevented fast times, leaving their drivers near the back of the grid despite their potential. This additional period was a response to the transport delay, not a standard modern practice session.
Qualifying Classification
The best timed lap set the grid, with wet running and the Maserati transport delay strongly affecting the order. Official timing credited seven drivers with the same fastest race lap; each received one-seventh of the bonus point.
What happened in the 1954 British Grand Prix?
González led from the start, while Fangio initially challenged. The Mercedes driver repeatedly struck marker drums and struggled with visibility and handling, allowing Moss and Hawthorn through. Rain later made the contest more difficult, but González remained composed at the front.
Moss established himself in second after a close contest with Hawthorn, only to retire with rear-axle trouble near the finish. Marimón meanwhile made excellent progress from the rear of the grid, taking advantage of the conditions and the retirements ahead.
González won ahead of Hawthorn and Marimón. Fangio finished fourth and Trintignant fifth. Ascari, Behra, Fangio, González, Hawthorn, Marimón and Moss shared fastest lap at 1:50.0, producing the unusual one-seventh-point allocations preserved in the results and standings.
After the race, Juan Manuel Fangio headed the drivers’ standings with 28 1/7 points, followed by José Froilán González on 14 9/14.
