Juan Manuel Fangio kept his composure through an extraordinary early accident to win the 1957 Monaco Grand Prix. As several leading rivals crashed out at the chicane, he slipped through to take control, eventually finishing ahead of Tony Brooks and impressive newcomer Masten Gregory.

Championship background
Juan Manuel Fangio arrived at round 2 leading the 1957 F1 World Championship on 8 points, with Jean Behra on 6.
Race entries
The organisers accepted twenty cars for practice but limited the starting field to sixteen. Ferrari and Maserati faced an expanding British challenge from Vanwall, BRM, Connaught and Cooper. Gregory, Stuart Lewis-Evans and Ivor Bueb made their championship debuts, while Cooper brought its compact rear-engined car with the new Coventry Climax engine.
Thursday timed practice
The early session began at 05:45 with Ferrari‘s cars still absent. Dust from a newly surfaced section made the circuit slippery, and Moss damaged a wheel and suspension at the chicane before changing to the spare Vanwall. BRM struggled with braking and handling, while Collins tried the waiting Coopers. Moss eventually edged Fangio to the quickest time and the prize offered for the morning’s best lap.
Friday timed practice
Overnight thunderstorms left wet roads for the second early start. Ferrari finally joined the action, while Maserati tried a V12 car whose poor low-speed response made it awkward through the hairpins. Brabham damaged a Cooper‘s front suspension, and several private Maserati drivers put pressure on the works teams. As the circuit dried, Collins briefly took the initiative before Fangio’s superb 1:42.7 secured the eventual pole.
Saturday final qualifying
Spilt fuel caused some alarming slides early in the afternoon, and warmer conditions made Friday’s best times difficult to beat. Cooper transferred its larger engine to the undamaged chassis for Brabham. Collins crashed Hawthorn’s Ferrari, forcing his team-mate into an older spare that he found surprisingly effective. Brabham and Flockhart improved enough to make the field; Salvadori, Simon, Piotti and Leston missed the cut.
Qualifying Classification
The fastest sixteen qualifiers were admitted to the race. Fangio’s Friday lap remained the best across the three sessions; there were no modern elimination segments.

What happened in the 1957 Monaco Grand Prix?
Moss led initially, but on the fourth lap went through the chicane barrier. Collins crashed while avoiding the debris, and Hawthorn struck Brooks’s car as the following drivers tried to escape the wreckage. Fangio negotiated the scene and emerged in front, with Brooks continuing despite damage.
Fangio controlled the race from there. Attrition steadily reduced the field, though von Trips looked set for third until his engine failed late on. Brabham inherited the position in the Cooper, only for his own engine to stop with the finish in sight. He coasted downhill and pushed the car to the line, classified sixth.
Brooks secured second for Vanwall, while Gregory took third on his championship debut. Lewis-Evans finished fourth and Trintignant fifth. Fangio’s victory and fastest lap strengthened his early championship lead, but the small Cooper‘s performance offered a glimpse of a different future for Grand Prix cars.
After the race, Juan Manuel Fangio headed the drivers’ standings with 17 points, followed by Jean Behra on 6.

There was no constructors’ championship in this season; the manufacturers’ competition began in 1958.
Drivers counted their best 5 results. The first five places earned 8–6–4–3–2 points, with one further point for fastest lap, shared equally when necessary. Points from shared drives were divided between the eligible drivers; individual allocations are shown in driver order.
