Championship background
Juan Manuel Fangio arrived at round 8 leading the 1957 F1 World Championship on 40 points, with Stirling Moss on 17.
Race entries
The organisers returned to Monza‘s road circuit, leaving the banking unused. Maserati brought its V12 as well as the familiar six-cylinder cars, while Ferrari welcomed von Trips back after injury. Vanwall retained Moss, Brooks and Lewis-Evans, with a fourth car available as a spare.
Friday timed practice
Vanwall and Maserati traded ever-quicker laps as the afternoon cooled. Moss tried several cars before settling into a contest with Fangio, ultimately ending fastest at 1:42.7. Ferrari could not match their speed despite repeated efforts. Maserati‘s V12 remained less convincing than its six-cylinder car, and the British team’s pace made clear how difficult the home manufacturers’ task would be.
Saturday final qualifying
Ferrari rearranged cars and engines, while the heat caused fuel-vaporisation problems for Vanwall even in the pits. Lewis-Evans then produced two outstanding laps in the former spare, taking pole at 1:42.4 before coasting to a halt with a broken magneto shaft. The fault was repairable, and Vanwall retained a qualifying one-two-three ahead of Fangio. Behra made progress with the V12, but could not break their hold.
Qualifying Classification
The fastest lap across Friday and Saturday determined the grid. This year’s road-only layout differed from the combined circuit used for the previous two Italian Grands Prix.

What happened in the 1957 Italian Grand Prix?
Moss led away as Behra’s V12 joined the Vanwalls and Fangio in a close opening battle. The contest gradually broke apart through pit stops and mechanical trouble: Lewis-Evans suffered a water leak, Brooks needed repairs, and Behra’s fuel and tyre requirements cost him time before overheating ended his race.
Moss increased his advantage over Fangio, who also had to stop for tyres. Ferrari lost Collins, while Hawthorn’s late fuel-system problem removed another contender for the podium. Schell took over Scarlatti’s Maserati after trouble with his own car, keeping their combined effort in the points.
Moss won ahead of Fangio and von Trips, with Gregory fourth and Schell and Scarlatti sharing fifth. Brooks set fastest lap despite finishing well down the order. Fangio had already secured the championship, but Moss’s late-season victories established Vanwall as a formidable rival for the following year.
After the race, Juan Manuel Fangio headed the drivers’ standings with 40 points, followed by Stirling Moss on 25.
