Championship background
Juan Manuel Fangio arrived at round 4 leading the 1957 F1 World Championship on 17 points, with Sam Hanks on 8.
Race entries
Vanwall arrived without Moss, who was ill, and Brooks, still recovering from his Le Mans accident. Salvadori switched from BRM to Vanwall, with Lewis-Evans joining him during practice. BRM gave Herbert MacKay-Fraser his championship debut, while Mike MacDowel made his first appearance in Cooper‘s second car. Fangio led Maserati against Ferrari‘s four-car team.
Friday timed practice
Behra’s knowledge of Rouen helped him set the initial pace, but Fangio soon found his rhythm on his first visit to the circuit. He tried both six-cylinder and V12 Maseratis, setting the best time in the former. Salvadori concentrated on learning the Vanwall, and MacKay-Fraser approached his BRM debut cautiously. Ferrari struggled to match Maserati‘s balance through the fast, flowing sections, despite strong efforts from Collins and Musso.
Saturday final qualifying
Another early session brought further improvement from Fangio, whose controlled slides through the fast corners produced a 2:21.5 pole lap. Behra finished more than a second behind, just ahead of Musso. A close on-track encounter involving Fangio, Behra, Collins and Musso sharpened the competition, while Lewis-Evans began learning the second Vanwall. The session left Maserati looking particularly well suited to Rouen.
Qualifying Classification
Friday and Saturday timed practice established the grid. This was the championship’s first visit to the longer Rouen layout, so comparisons with the previous circuit required care.

What happened in the 1957 French Grand Prix?
Musso led the opening lap after a confused start, but Fangio soon moved past and began building a lead. Flockhart crashed after encountering oil, suffering leg injuries, while Brabham and Gould also retired early. MacKay-Fraser impressed in the BRM before mechanical concerns ended his afternoon.
Collins briefly challenged Musso for second and traded fast laps with Fangio, but gearbox trouble compromised his pace. Musso resumed the pursuit and later set fastest lap as Ferrari hoped the leader might need a tyre stop. A spin cost him time, and Fangio continued without stopping.
Fangio won ahead of Musso, Collins and Hawthorn. Behra endured exhaust and oil problems to take fifth, with Schell sixth in another ailing Maserati. MacDowel and Brabham shared the surviving Cooper in seventh. The result extended Fangio’s championship advantage while Musso’s fastest lap added a point to his runner-up finish.
After the race, Juan Manuel Fangio headed the drivers’ standings with 25 points, followed by Sam Hanks on 8.
