Championship background
Juan Manuel Fangio arrived at round 5 leading the 1957 F1 World Championship on 25 points, with Sam Hanks on 8.
Race entries
Moss returned from illness and Brooks rejoined Vanwall despite lingering pain from his Le Mans injuries. Lewis-Evans completed its three-car line-up. BRM paired Jack Fairman with Les Leston, while Salvadori moved into a Cooper alongside Brabham. Maserati brought its established six-cylinder cars, and Ferrari fielded Collins, Hawthorn, Musso and Trintignant.
Thursday timed practice
The track was damp as Vanwall began running, with Moss trying all three cars while Brooks eased himself back into competitive driving. The major teams exchanged cars extensively, making it important for the timekeepers to identify the driver rather than simply the number. Behra finished fastest in Fangio’s Maserati. Vanwall also evaluated Dunlop tyres as supplies of Pirelli racing tyres dwindled, while BRM‘s new drivers concentrated on familiarisation.
Friday final qualifying
Dry conditions offered more confidence, although a strong headwind limited straight-line speed. Maserati‘s cars looked comfortable through the corners, while Ferrari and BRM struggled with understeer. Fairman ran off after braking trouble, and Brabham spun without damage. Moss finally beat Behra’s benchmark with 2:00.2, while Brooks matched the Maserati‘s time to put a second Vanwall on the front row.
Qualifying Classification
Thursday and Friday timed practice set the grid for Saturday’s race. Car-sharing remained legal and could earn divided points, but the officials retained discretion over insufficient driving distances.

What happened in the 1957 British Grand Prix?
Moss took the lead on the opening lap and began pulling away, only for a persistent misfire to send him to the pits. Brooks, still uncomfortable after his injuries, handed over his healthy car. Moss rejoined well down the order and launched a determined recovery as Behra led Hawthorn and Lewis-Evans.
The decisive change came when Behra’s Maserati suffered a major mechanical failure. Hawthorn punctured a tyre on the debris, and Moss emerged ahead of Lewis-Evans as the Vanwalls swept into first and second. Their hopes of a one-two ended when Lewis-Evans stopped with a throttle-linkage problem, though he later resumed.
Moss brought Brooks’s car home ahead of Musso and Hawthorn. The winning pair split the eight victory points, and Moss also earned the fastest-lap point. Trintignant received all three points for fourth despite Collins briefly taking over his Ferrari, because Collins’s contribution was judged too short. Salvadori coaxed his troubled Cooper to fifth. For Vanwall, the home victory marked a breakthrough after years of development.
After the race, Juan Manuel Fangio headed the drivers’ standings with 25 points, followed by Luigi Musso on 13.
