Championship background
Juan Manuel Fangio arrived at round 7 leading the 1954 F1 World Championship on 36 1/7 points, with José Froilán González on 17 9/14.
Race entries
Mercedes brought three open-wheel cars with reinforced rear suspension. Ferrari‘s preparations were disrupted when Manzon crashed, leading to a reshuffle that put González and Hawthorn in earlier-model cars. Moss continued with factory support from Maserati, while Gordini and a small number of private entrants completed the field.
First timed practice
Damp conditions kept the new Formula One cars away from the circuit’s older outright record. González nevertheless edged Fangio by two-tenths to establish the eventual pole time, with Moss third. Ferrari‘s accident damage forced changes to its planned allocation of cars, and the teams worked towards a set-up suitable for the wooded, high-speed course.
Final qualifying
Continuous rain made the second session much slower. Poor light in the wooded sections further complicated visibility, but Moss was quickest in the wet, narrowly ahead of Kling. None of the times threatened the previous session’s grid order, leaving González, Fangio and Moss together on the front row.
Qualifying Classification
Two timed-practice periods established the grid. The wet final session could not improve the earlier times. Only the best five championship results counted, a crucial consideration in the title outcome.

What happened in the 1954 Swiss Grand Prix?
Fangio took the lead at the start and steadily drew away. Moss passed González, while Hawthorn also joined the pursuit and briefly moved into second. Their challenge ended through mechanical trouble, leaving González as the closest surviving opponent.
Trintignant retired with an engine problem and Kling also stopped, promoting Herrmann into third. Fangio continued to set the pace and earned fastest lap, then managed his advantage through the final stages.
González finished second, Herrmann third, Mieres fourth and Mantovani fifth. Fangio’s victory put the championship beyond González’s reach under the retained-results system. It was also the final World Championship Grand Prix held at Bremgarten.
After the race, Juan Manuel Fangio headed the drivers’ standings with 42 points, followed by José Froilán González on 23 9/14.
