Championship background
Stirling Moss arrived at round 7 leading the 1958 F1 World Championship on 23 points, with Mike Hawthorn on 23.
Race entries
Ferrari continued with Collins, Hawthorn and von Trips after Musso’s death. Lotus entered its newer cars alongside Allison’s older machine, with Alan Stacey making his championship debut. Bernie Ecclestone‘s Connaughts joined the private entries, while Gregory’s planned BRM drive was lost after he was injured in a sports-car practice accident.
Thursday timed practice
Moss set a new benchmark of 1:39.4 and Brooks was also quick, giving Vanwall reason to expect a strong home race. BRM‘s revised oil-cooling arrangement was among the mechanical developments being evaluated. Ferrari‘s drivers worked hard but could not yet match the leading green cars, while the lighter Cooper and Lotus entries offered another route to a competitive lap.
Friday final qualifying
Moss remained fastest, although he did not improve on Thursday. Schell attacked aggressively to put BRM near the front, while Salvadori quietly recorded an excellent lap in the larger-engined Cooper. Collins and Hawthorn were still unable to break the same time barrier as the fastest opposition. The grid therefore suggested British machinery would dominate, a prediction Ferrari would overturn decisively in the race.
Qualifying Classification
The fastest laps from Thursday and Friday set the grid for Saturday’s Grand Prix. The practice results are preserved separately from the eventual race performance.

What happened in the 1958 British Grand Prix?
Collins surged through from the second row and led by the end of the opening lap. Moss pursued him hard, but the Ferrari handled its full fuel load well and refused to be caught. Hawthorn held third, waiting behind the duel, while Salvadori and Brabham fought through the midfield.
Moss’s engine failed, leaving Ferrari in command. Hawthorn required a stop for oil but retained second, while Salvadori established himself in third. Lotus lost all three cars, and BRM‘s challenge was complicated by temperature and reliability problems.
Collins completed a commanding win, with Hawthorn second and credited with fastest lap. Salvadori held Lewis-Evans off by only two-tenths at the flag, and Schell finished fifth. Ferrari had overturned the qualifying picture and delivered a convincing one-two on Vanwall‘s home ground.
After the race, Mike Hawthorn headed the drivers’ standings with 30 points, followed by Stirling Moss on 23.
