Stirling Moss did everything he could at the 1958 Moroccan Grand Prix, winning and setting fastest lap, but second place made Mike Hawthorn Britain’s first World Drivers’ Champion. The title was settled by a single point at Ain-Diab, although Stuart Lewis-Evans‘s accident and subsequent death cast a lasting shadow over the finale.

Championship background
Mike Hawthorn arrived at round 11 leading the 1958 F1 World Championship on 40 points, with Stirling Moss on 32.
Race entries
Nineteen Formula One cars were joined by six Formula Two Coopers. Ferrari and Vanwall each brought three cars, while BRM fielded four. Jack Fairman joined Cooper‘s larger-engined challenge, with Brabham and McLaren among the Formula Two runners. Hawthorn arrived leading the championship; Moss needed victory and a result that kept his rival below second.
Friday timed practice
Behra set the pace in the afternoon heat, with Brooks and Hawthorn close behind. Moss struggled to find a clear lap among the mixed field and remained outside the leading trio despite a late effort. Ferrari continued its brake experiments: Hawthorn used discs, while Phil Hill retained drums. The long, fast road circuit rewarded confidence, but traffic made it difficult to string together an uninterrupted qualifying lap.
Saturday final qualifying
Cooler, cloudier conditions helped the times tumble. Moss suffered engine trouble and tried other Vanwalls while the team reorganised its cars, then recorded 2:23.2. Hawthorn beat that by a tenth to claim pole, with Lewis-Evans completing the front row. Brabham headed the Formula Two runners, whose smaller engines left them well behind the outright pole time despite competing on the same grid.
Qualifying Classification
Timed practice on Friday and Saturday determined the combined Formula One and Formula Two grid. Formula Two competitors were not eligible for World Championship points; their results remain in the overall race classification.

What happened in the 1958 Moroccan Grand Prix?
Moss took command immediately. Phil Hill initially challenged him but ran wide while attempting to pass, then recovered ahead of Hawthorn. Moss kept extending his advantage, even after minor contact while lapping Seidel. Brooks briefly threatened Ferrari‘s championship plan before engine trouble ended his race.
With Moss beyond reach, Ferrari asked Phil Hill to let Hawthorn through. The change gave Hawthorn the second place he needed, while Bonnier and Schell brought BRM into the remaining points positions. Lewis-Evans crashed after an engine failure and suffered severe burns; he died six days later.
Moss won comfortably and earned the fastest-lap point, finishing the championship with 41 points. Hawthorn’s second place took his retained score to 42, securing the title ahead of his retirement from racing. Phil Hill finished third, having played a decisive supporting role. Vanwall had already secured the constructors’ crown at Monza.
After the race, Mike Hawthorn headed the drivers’ standings with 42 points, followed by Stirling Moss on 41.
