Tony Brooks turned a difficult start into a magnificent Monza victory in the 1958 Italian Grand Prix. His recovery secured Vanwall the inaugural constructors’ title, while Mike Hawthorn salvaged second with a failing clutch to strengthen his position in the drivers’ championship.

Championship background

Mike Hawthorn arrived at round 10 leading the 1958 F1 World Championship on 36 points, with Stirling Moss on 32.

Race entries

Ferrari fielded Hawthorn, Phil Hill, Wolfgang von Trips and Olivier Gendebien, with several brake and engine combinations under evaluation. Jo Bonnier joined BRM alongside Jean Behra and Harry Schell. Masten Gregory returned after injury in the Temple Buell Maserati, while Carroll Shelby drove a separate Centro Sud entry.

Friday timed practice

Monza prompted some striking experiments. Moss tried a transparent cockpit canopy on his Vanwall, but the extra comfort brought no useful speed advantage and a missed gear damaged his engine. Ferrari evaluated revised engines and brakes, with Hawthorn trying disc brakes. Brooks set the afternoon’s quickest lap, while an engine failure left Allison needing a replacement for his older Lotus.

Saturday final qualifying

Vanwall abandoned its canopy experiment and fitted a replacement engine for Moss, who delivered a late 1:40.5 to take pole. Brooks completed a Vanwall one-two, with Hawthorn and Lewis-Evans filling the remaining front-row places. Ferrari changed Hawthorn’s engine specification again, while Allison faced the race with a smaller 1.5-litre engine. Shelby’s preparations were disrupted by a driveshaft failure and a change of car.

Qualifying Classification

The best lap across the two timed practice days established the grid. The road circuit was used, without the banking; there were no separate knockout qualifying stages.

What happened in the 1958 Italian Grand Prix?

Phil Hill burst into the lead from the second row, but an early tyre problem forced him into the pits. The opening lap also eliminated von Trips and Schell in a collision, while contact between Brabham and Gendebien eventually put both cars out. Hawthorn and Moss fought at the front until the Vanwall‘s gearbox failed.

Brooks had lost considerable time investigating an oil leak, yet his car remained competitive. As Ferrari made tyre stops, he steadily worked back towards Hawthorn. Gregory also pressed the Ferrari hard before exhaustion on his return from injury prompted him to hand over to Shelby.

Hawthorn’s clutch began slipping in the closing stages, and Brooks caught and passed him to win. Hawthorn nursed the Ferrari home second ahead of Phil Hill, who set fastest lap. Gregory and Shelby shared fourth without scoring points under the new shared-drive rule, leaving Salvadori fifth. Vanwall had clinched the manufacturers’ championship, though Hawthorn remained ahead of Moss in the drivers’ contest.

After the race, Mike Hawthorn headed the drivers’ standings with 40 points, followed by Stirling Moss on 32.
