Tony Brooks took his first solo championship victory at the 1958 Belgian Grand Prix, bringing Vanwall home ahead of Mike Hawthorn and Stuart Lewis-Evans. All three reached the finish with mechanical trouble, making Spa’s final moments almost as dramatic as the racing that preceded them.

Championship background
Stirling Moss arrived at round 5 leading the 1958 F1 World Championship on 17 points, with Luigi Musso on 12.
Race entries
Spa returned after its 1957 absence with resurfaced roads and revised facilities. Ferrari added Olivier Gendebien in a yellow car for his home race, while Brabham initially missed running through illness. Maria Teresa de Filippis qualified her Maserati to become the first woman to start a World Championship Grand Prix.
Thursday timed practice
Hawthorn demonstrated Ferrari‘s high-speed potential as the teams adjusted to the faster, resurfaced circuit. Vanwall began refining its gearing and wheel choices, but BRM had a much more difficult evening. Oil on Behra’s rear tyres triggered a frightening slide through Masta and a crash that damaged the front of his car. He escaped injury, while Ferrari ended the session with a clear warning of its pace.
Friday timed practice
Moss transformed Vanwall‘s position after changes to wheel sizes improved both handling and gearing. His 3:57.6 broke the four-minute barrier and appeared to settle the argument. Ferrari‘s drivers kept pressing, while Allison impressed in the larger-engined Lotus. Brabham lost an engine bearing, and Gregory showed excellent speed in an older Maserati before also trying a new lightweight car.
Saturday final qualifying
Vanwall left Moss’s car in the garage, confident that his time would stand, but Hawthorn overturned that calculation with 3:57.1. Musso also improved ahead of Moss, while Brooks could not respond after gearbox trouble. Ferrari‘s four drivers all broke four minutes. Among the Maseratis, engine and driveline failures created an anxious evening of repairs before the race.
Qualifying Classification
The best lap from three timed sessions established the grid. Hawthorn took pole after a late Ferrari improvement; Moss’s Friday benchmark remained his qualifying time.

What happened in the 1958 Belgian Grand Prix?
Moss’s challenge ended almost immediately with engine trouble, leaving Brooks to carry Vanwall‘s main hopes. He worked into the lead and built an advantage over Hawthorn as the fast circuit exacted a heavy mechanical toll. Collins also retired, and Lewis-Evans moved towards a podium place.
The finish brought a remarkable sequence of failures. Brooks reached the line as his gearbox seized; Hawthorn’s engine failed as he completed his final run from La Source; and Lewis-Evans nursed damaged suspension home for third. All had just enough momentum or remaining machinery to secure their results.
Allison finished fourth, earning Lotus its first championship points, with Schell fifth. De Filippis completed her historic first start in tenth. Brooks had shared the winning Vanwall at Aintree the previous year, but this time the victory was his alone.
After the race, Stirling Moss headed the drivers’ standings with 17 points, followed by Mike Hawthorn on 14.
