Championship background
Mike Hawthorn arrived at round 9 leading the 1958 F1 World Championship on 30 points, with Stirling Moss on 24.
Race entries
Portugal joined the World Championship at Porto’s fast street circuit. Ferrari continued with Hawthorn and von Trips after Collins’s death, while the other leading teams brought their regular cars. Cliff Allison and Maria Teresa de Filippis both needed replacement machinery after accidents during practice.
Friday timed practice
The unfamiliar combination of cobbles, tram rails and fast streets demanded careful exploration. Allison crashed his Lotus beyond repair, and de Filippis damaged her Maserati against a lamp standard; both escaped injury. As the leaders learnt the circuit, the benchmark passed between Ferrari, BRM and Vanwall before Moss ended the session fastest. Trintignant also impressed with smooth, precise laps in the smaller Cooper.
Saturday final qualifying
Allison transferred to a Centro Sud Maserati and de Filippis borrowed Gerini’s car. Hawthorn improved substantially, but Moss eventually beat him by just five-hundredths with 2:34.21. Lewis-Evans joined them on the front row after a late run, with Behra close behind. The session demonstrated how little separated the leading drivers despite the circuit’s unusual demands.
Qualifying Classification
The best lap across Friday and Saturday set the grid, with electrical timing to hundredths of a second. Replacement cars and Allison’s change of constructor are retained in the entries and classifications.

What happened in the 1958 Portuguese Grand Prix?
Rain left the roads damp at the start, and Hawthorn briefly led before Moss took control as the surface dried. The Vanwall pulled away, while Hawthorn’s brake difficulties complicated his effort to hold second. Lewis-Evans and Behra remained in contention behind him.
Hawthorn later spun and restarted using the slope beside the circuit. His movement against the normal direction of travel prompted a disqualification, but Moss explained that the restart had taken place off the racing surface. The decision was reversed, restoring Hawthorn’s second place and fastest-lap point.
Moss’s victory stood, with Hawthorn second, Lewis-Evans third, Behra fourth and von Trips fifth. The sporting intervention preserved seven points that would prove decisive in the championship, while Moss left Portugal having demonstrated both his pace and his willingness to defend a rival’s fair result.
After the race, Mike Hawthorn headed the drivers’ standings with 36 points, followed by Stirling Moss on 32.
