Championship background

Juan Manuel Fangio arrived at round 3 leading the 1954 F1 World Championship on 8 points, with Bill Vukovich on 8.

Race entries

Mercedes‘ new car was not yet ready, so Fangio continued with Maserati. Lancia also withdrew its planned entry, leaving Ascari absent. Ferrari welcomed Farina and Hawthorn back after injuries, while Belgian drivers Frère, Pilette and Swaters added local interest to a compact field.

Thursday timed practice

Only Ferrari appeared for the opening evening. González was pleased with revisions to the newer car’s balance, while Farina preferred the older design. The team evaluated its machinery without attempting particularly quick laps, then stopped when drizzle arrived. It was a preparation session rather than a full confrontation with the opposition.

Friday timed practice

Fangio immediately joined González in a battle for the quickest lap. González set a strong benchmark, but Fangio returned near the end and produced 4:22.1 to take pole. Ferrari compared its two designs, while Moss had oil problems and Mieres gained little running after oil-pipe failures. The demanding circuit exposed the differences between the leading cars and their pursuers.

Saturday final qualifying

The final afternoon was calmer. Hawthorn and Moss improved, while Trintignant tried Ferrari‘s newer car to prepare for its wider use. Fangio’s Friday time remained unbeaten. The field completed its preparations with Maserati on pole and Ferrari occupying the next two places.

Qualifying Classification

Three timed-practice periods established the grid. De Graffenried’s camera-equipped car accompanied the start for film footage but was not a competing race entry and is not added to the classification.

What happened in the 1954 Belgian Grand Prix?

González led initially but retired almost immediately, while Mieres escaped with burns after his Maserati caught fire. Fangio recovered from a poor start to pass the Ferraris. A broken visor strap briefly interrupted his progress, but he soon regained the lead.

Farina’s engine failed, and Hawthorn became unwell as exhaust fumes entered his cockpit. González took over that Ferrari, then lost further time having the exhaust repaired. Trintignant inherited second, with Moss progressing steadily behind him.

Fangio won and set fastest lap. Trintignant finished second, Moss third, and Hawthorn and González shared fourth. Pilette took fifth in the Gordini. The result gave Fangio a strong championship lead and Moss his first podium, despite late concerns over the private Maserati‘s oil pressure.

After the race, Juan Manuel Fangio headed the drivers’ standings with 17 points, followed by Maurice Trintignant on 9.
