André “Dries” van der Lof was a Dutch racing driver and industrialist whose brief appearance in Formula One placed him in the history books of his country’s motorsport. Though never a full-time professional racer, he combined business success with a passion for competition, taking part as a dedicated amateur in an era when such dual careers were still possible.

Early life and business career
Born in Emmen in the Netherlands, van der Lof built his professional life as an industrialist, running a factory that manufactured electric cable. Motorsport, for him, was not a career necessity but a pursuit driven by enthusiasm—a passion he pursued alongside his business ventures.
Racing career
Van der Lof’s moment on the world stage came at the 1952 Dutch Grand Prix. Driving an HWM 52, he lined up alongside fellow countryman Jan Flinterman, and together they became the first Dutch drivers ever to compete in a Formula One World Championship Grand Prix.
During the race, van der Lof completed 70 laps before retiring, and he did not score any championship points. While his Formula One career amounted to just that single appearance, its historical significance for Dutch motorsport remains considerable.
Life in racing beyond Formula One
Van der Lof’s involvement in racing did not end with Formula One. He later acquired a Maserati 250F—one of the most iconic Grand Prix cars of its era—and continued competing in historic racing events well into the 1980s.
He died on 24 May 1990 in Enschede.
