Early Racing Career
Born in Brescia and raised in nearby Bergamo, Comotti made his first major racing appearance at the 1928 Italian Grand Prix, driving one of Scuderia Materassi’s Talbots. After that event, he stepped away from competition for a period and even withdrew from a planned entry in the 1929 Indianapolis 500.
He returned to racing in 1931 with victory in the cyclecar race at the Circuito di Alessandria aboard a Salmson. Soon afterwards, he delivered his Alfa Romeo Monza sports car to Scuderia Ferrari’s Modena workshop for servicing, a visit that ultimately led to him becoming one of the team’s official drivers for the 1932 season.
Success with Ferrari
Comotti quickly became a valuable member of the Ferrari line-up during the pre-war years. His biggest triumph came in 1934, when he won the Grand Prix du Comminges for the Italian team.
Later that same season, he shared an Alfa Romeo with Carlo Felice Trossi to finish third in the prestigious Italian Grand Prix. Comotti remained with Scuderia Ferrari through the end of the 1935 campaign, racing in Grand Prix and sports car events across Europe.
Talbot, Delahaye & Le Mans
In 1937, Comotti relocated to France to join the Talbot team as a test driver. His role involved developing cars for customers while also serving as a reserve driver for the factory racing squad. During the same season, he added another notable success to his résumé by winning the RAC Tourist Trophy at Donington Park.
In 1938, he moved to Laurie and Lucy Schell’s Ecurie Bleue team, driving a Delahaye. That season saw him make his first German Grand Prix start as well as his only appearance in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Unfortunately, mechanical problems brought both races to an early end.
Formula One
Following the Second World War, Comotti became heavily involved in developing the Talbot-Lago T26C as one of the marque’s test drivers, while also making several Grand Prix appearances with the car during the 1948 season.
He entered the newly created Formula One World Championship in 1950 as a test driver for Scuderia Milano, making his World Championship debut at the 1950 Italian Grand Prix on 3 September. His second and final championship appearance came two years later at the 1952 French Grand Prix, where he drove a Ferrari entered by Scuderia Marzotto.
Although he did not score World Championship points, Comotti remained an active driver in numerous non-championship Formula One races during the early 1950s.
Later Years & Legacy
After retiring from competitive racing, Comotti continued his professional career with BP, working in North Africa while remaining closely connected to the motorsport world.
In 1962, he became one of the nine founding members of the Club International des Anciens Pilotes de Grand Prix F1, an organisation created to bring together former Grand Prix drivers and preserve the history of the sport.
Comotti passed away on 10 May 1963 at the age of 56.
