1962 F1 World Championship

Season Summary

The 1962 FIA Formula One World Championship began on 20 May and concluded on 29 December, over 9 Grand Prix, alongside 20 non-championship races open to Formula One cars.

Season

The World Drivers’ Championship was won by Graham Hill, driving for BRM, securing the first title of his Formula One career. The championship battle went down to the final race, where Hill’s main rival Jim Clark retired, allowing Hill to clinch the title. BRM also claimed the Manufacturers’ Championship, marking the only Constructors’ title in the team’s history.

One of the most significant milestones of the season came with Jack Brabham, a two-time World Champion, who had formed his own team. At the United States Grand Prix, he debuted the Brabham BT3, becoming the first driver in F1 history to score championship points in a car bearing his own name—a unique achievement that remains a defining moment in the sport.

Tragically, the year was also marked by the death of Ricardo Rodríguez, who suffered a fatal crash during practice for the non-championship Mexican Grand Prix, his home event. Rodríguez had been the youngest driver to race for Ferrari, and his passing made him the youngest Formula One driver to lose his life, highlighting the significant safety risks present in the sport during this period.
