Arzani-Volpini, also known as Scuderia Volpini, was an Italian Formula One constructor founded by Gian Paolo Volpini and engine specialist Egidio Arzani. Although its time in the World Championship was brief, the team reflected the ambition of Italy’s thriving post-war motorsport scene, where small independent constructors regularly challenged the established names.

Before entering Formula One, Gian Paolo Volpini had built a reputation in junior single-seater categories, including Formula Junior and Formula Three. In 1954, he joined forces with Arzani with the aim of stepping onto the Formula One stage. Rather than designing a completely new car, the pair acquired the chassis of the 1950 Scuderia Milano-Maserati and extensively reworked it for the 1955 season.
The car received an upgraded engine, revised bodywork and a new body built by the renowned Carrozzeria Colli. It was originally intended to make its debut at the 1955 Valentino Grand Prix with Mario Alborghetti at the wheel, but construction delays meant the car was not completed in time.
Instead, Arzani-Volpini first appeared at the 1955 Grand Prix de Pau. Tragically, the event ended in disaster when Alborghetti suffered a fatal accident during the race, casting a shadow over the team’s debut.
The team’s only Formula One World Championship appearance came later that year at the 1955 Italian Grand Prix. Luigi Piotti was entered to drive the car, but a problem with its Maserati-Speluzzi 2.5-litre inline-four engine prevented him from taking the start.
Following its unsuccessful World Championship campaign, Arzani-Volpini withdrew from Formula One and returned its focus to the junior categories that had first established the team’s reputation. The company continued building Formula Junior and Formula Three cars, with future Formula One driver Lorenzo Bandini among those to race its machinery.
