Olivier Grouillard (born 2 September 1958) is a French former racing driver who competed in Formula One between 1989 and 1992 before continuing his career in IndyCar and international sports car racing. A French Formula Renault and Formula Three champion, Grouillard built a successful career across a wide range of disciplines, including Formula 3000, CART, endurance racing and GT competition.

Early Life and Junior Career
Born in Fenouillet, Haute-Garonne, France, on 2 September 1958, Grouillard began karting at the age of 14. His early promise was recognised through the prestigious Volant Elf programme, which helped launch the careers of many leading French drivers.
He graduated to Formula Renault in 1982 and immediately captured the championship, establishing himself as one of France’s brightest young talents.
Grouillard continued his rapid rise by joining the French Formula Three Championship with ORECA in 1983. After finishing fourth in his debut season, he claimed the title in 1984, earning promotion to the inaugural International Formula 3000 Championship.
Formula 3000
Grouillard competed in Formula 3000 between 1985 and 1988, racing for several teams while steadily developing into one of the category’s leading drivers.
Although his early seasons were affected by limited budgets and inconsistent machinery, he regularly impressed with his qualifying pace. Returning to ORECA before joining GBDA Motorsport, he became a consistent front-runner and ended his Formula 3000 career with four victories and a runner-up finish in the 1994 championship.
Alongside his single-seater programme, Grouillard also raced BMW touring cars in both the 1987 World Touring Car Championship and the 1988 European Touring Car Championship.
Formula One Career
Grouillard made his Formula One World Championship debut with Ligier in 1989, partnering experienced French driver René Arnoux.
His strongest performance came at the French Grand Prix, where he finished sixth to score the only World Championship point of his career. Elsewhere during the season, he recorded several top-ten finishes but also experienced inconsistent qualifying performances and developed an unfortunate reputation for obstructing faster cars during qualifying sessions, leading to public frustration from drivers including Nelson Piquet and Nigel Mansell.
In 1990, Grouillard moved to the financially struggling Osella team. Despite the limitations of the car, he produced several impressive qualifying performances, including eighth on the grid at the United States Grand Prix in Phoenix. However, mechanical failures, accidents and the demanding pre-qualifying system prevented the team from converting potential into results.
He remained with the squad after its transformation into Fondmetal for 1991. Once again, reliability and competitiveness proved major obstacles, although he managed to qualify for several races and recorded a best finish of tenth at the Belgian Grand Prix. His relationship with team owner Gabriele Rumi deteriorated late in the season, leading to his departure before the final races. He briefly joined AGS, but the struggling team folded before the season concluded.
Grouillard’s final Formula One campaign came with Tyrrell in 1992 alongside Andrea de Cesaris. Regular midfield qualifying performances demonstrated his speed, but a combination of mechanical problems and racing incidents prevented him from building momentum. At the end of the season, without securing another Formula One opportunity, he left the World Championship after four years and 41 Grand Prix starts.
CART and American Racing
In 1993, Grouillard crossed the Atlantic to compete in the CART PPG IndyCar World Series.
Driving for Indy Regency Racing, he attempted to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 but narrowly missed the field. Despite that disappointment, he completed the remainder of the season with a series of consistent performances, finishing eight of the eleven races he entered and ending the championship in 28th place.
Sports Car Racing
Following his IndyCar campaign, Grouillard returned to Europe and embarked on a lengthy and successful sports car career.
Between 1994 and 2001, he competed in many of the world’s leading endurance championships, including the BPR Global GT Series, FIA GT Championship and the American Le Mans Series.
Driving machinery from Venturi, McLaren, Porsche, Panoz and Courage, Grouillard became a regular front-runner. He achieved multiple victories in the BPR Global GT Series, claimed podium finishes across Europe and raced repeatedly at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Among his best endurance results were fifth overall at Le Mans in 1995 driving a McLaren F1 GTR and fourth overall in 2000 aboard a Courage C52-Peugeot. He also competed in the Daytona 24 Hours, the Japanese GT Championship and numerous international endurance classics, establishing himself as one of France’s most versatile racing drivers.
Olivier Grouillard retired from professional motorsport at the end of 2001 after a career spanning nearly three decades.
