Championship background

Nigel Mansell arrived at round 16 leading the 1992 F1 World Championship on 108 points, with Riccardo Patrese on 56. Williams headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 164 points.

Race entries

The same 26 drivers travelled to Adelaide. Nicola Larini continued at Ferrari and Jan Lammers at March. It was the final race of the McLaren–Honda partnership of that era, while Nigel Mansell was preparing to leave Formula 1 for IndyCar.

Friday Free Practice

Nigel Mansell led Friday practice, with Ayrton Senna close enough to suggest McLaren might put up a stronger fight on Adelaide’s streets. Lehto lost valuable running while Dallara replaced electrical wiring, and Ferrari continued its split suspension programme. Jean Alesi was comparatively comfortable with the conventional car, while Nicola Larini struggled to make the active version work effectively.

Saturday Free Practice

Nigel Mansell again set the pace on Saturday morning, but Ayrton Senna remained within half a second. Benetton had work to do on its balance: Martin Brundle was battling a mixture of understeer and oversteer, while Michael Schumacher had an encounter with the barriers during the weekend. Emanuele Naspetti also crashed on Saturday, adding repair work to March‘s already strained final preparations.

Ayrton Senna was fastest on Saturday, but nobody displaced Nigel Mansell‘s Friday benchmark. His 14th pole of the season set a new record. Ayrton Senna joined him on the front row, with Riccardo Patrese and Gerhard Berger behind. All 26 entrants qualified.

Sunday warm-up

Riccardo Patrese headed a Williams one-two in the warm-up, with Ayrton Senna close behind. Dark clouds initially threatened another wet Adelaide race, but a strong wind moved them away. The teams could prepare for a dry contest, where preserving the tyres and selecting the right moment to stop would matter. The close front-running pace promised a more competitive farewell than the season’s many Williams processions.

What happened in the 1992 Australian Grand Prix?

Nigel Mansell led from Ayrton Senna, who stayed close and repeatedly looked for a way through. Their battle ended when the McLaren hit the rear of the Williams at the hairpin, eliminating both. Riccardo Patrese inherited the lead, with Gerhard Berger now his closest challenger.

Gerhard Berger stopped for fresh tyres and Michael Schumacher followed later, emerging behind the McLaren. Riccardo Patrese appeared well placed to win, but an engine failure ended his race. Gerhard Berger took over and had to manage a steadily closing Michael Schumacher over the final laps.

Gerhard Berger held on by 0.741 seconds, with Martin Brundle third and Jean Alesi fourth. Thierry Boutsen scored fifth for Ligier and Stefano Modena took Jordan‘s only point of the season in sixth. Benetton finished the year having scored in every race, while McLaren and Honda ended their partnership with another victory.

After the race, Nigel Mansell headed the drivers’ standings with 108 points, followed by Riccardo Patrese on 56. Williams led the constructors’ table on 164, with McLaren on 99.
