Championship background
Nigel Mansell arrived at round 10 leading the 1992 F1 World Championship on 76 points, with Riccardo Patrese on 40. Williams headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 116 points.
Race entries
Alessandro Zanardi continued to deputise for Christian Fittipaldi at Minardi, and the remaining driver pairings were unchanged. Andrea Chiesa faced another difficult weekend with Fondmetal; this would be his final Grand Prix appearance before van de Eric van de Poele took over the seat.
Pre-qualifying
Gabriele Tarquini led Bertrand Gachot, Ukyo Katayama and Andrea Chiesa into the main sessions. Roberto Moreno again narrowly missed the cut, while McCarthy was excluded after failing to stop for a weight check. Both Andrea Moda cars were out before Friday’s main running began.

Friday Free Practice
Friday practice introduced the drivers to Hockenheim’s revised chicanes, where the uneven surface remained a concern despite resurfacing work. Nigel Mansell was quickest, with Williams‘ active suspension helping it cope with the bumps. Benetton had its newer Ford engine available for the race, while McLaren and Ferrari continued aerodynamic and suspension development in their efforts to reduce the gap.

Friday Qualifying
Nigel Mansell headed Friday qualifying, with Ayrton Senna second and Riccardo Patrese third. The Williams driver already had a substantial margin, but the final order was still open ahead of Saturday’s session.

Saturday Free Practice
Nigel Mansell again led Saturday morning, with Riccardo Patrese recovering from suspension difficulties to move into second. Lotus had less success with its own active system and reverted to conventional suspension. Reliability also interrupted several midfield programmes, including Larrousse‘s engine troubles. On such a fast circuit, the pursuit of low drag still had to leave a car the driver could trust through the chicanes.

Saturday Qualifying
Nigel Mansell improved to 1:37.960 and Riccardo Patrese joined him on the front row. Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger followed, with Jean Alesi fifth and Michael Schumacher sixth. Stefano Modena, van de Eric van de Poele, Andrea Chiesa and Damon Hill failed to qualify.

Sunday warm-up
Nigel Mansell headed the warm-up as the teams prepared for a race in which a tyre stop was far from a foregone conclusion. Michael Schumacher and the Ferrari drivers selected harder tyres, while Ayrton Senna would attempt to make his softer set last. Those contrasting choices made managing the first stint especially important: fresh rubber offered speed, but stopping meant giving away track position.

What happened in the 1992 German Grand Prix?
Riccardo Patrese made a strong start, but Nigel Mansell took command on the opening lap. A suspected tyre problem prompted Nigel Mansell to stop, allowing Ayrton Senna‘s non-stop strategy to bring him into contention. The Williams soon caught the McLaren and regained the lead after a tense pursuit.
Riccardo Patrese faced a much more stubborn challenge from Ayrton Senna. He repeatedly searched for a way past, but the Brazilian defended second place with great precision. On the final lap Riccardo Patrese spun while trying once more, losing his chance of points.
Nigel Mansell won, while Ayrton Senna finished second and ran out of fuel shortly after the flag. Michael Schumacher inherited third to the delight of the home crowd. Martin Brundle, Jean Alesi and Erik Comas completed the points, and Nigel Mansell moved another step closer to the championship.
After the race, Nigel Mansell headed the drivers’ standings with 86 points, followed by Riccardo Patrese on 40. Williams led the constructors’ table on 126, with Benetton on 49.
